Monte Cassino, Cassino

(4.5/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Built on the site of a sixth-century monastery, Monte Cassino was designed by some of southeastern Europe's finest artists before its papal consecration in 1041. The abbey has been restored since its destruction in 1944 during the Battle of Monte Cassino. View relics, mosaics, manuscripts, and other artifacts as you wander the hallways and courtyards. The hike to the monastery, which is on a 520 m (1,706 ft) high hill, is extremely steep. Plan to take public transportation to the top. • Beautiful and impressive ... attention to detail ... White doves. l incense which you breathe, Gregorian chants during mass. the scenery, the crypt and the mosaics ... very impressive and it's all free. Inside there is a Museum for a fee but the visit is optional. My husband and l we visited we wanted to have a general view and enjoy until the end of "history". Go you will not regret it.

  • God curse Mark Clark the American General who ordered the destruction of the Abbey of Montecassino. It was a military operation unitile, criminal and harmful. The Germans, until then had acted with great propriety not occupying the sacred building. I have photos of the Church before the destruction, then it was probably the most beautiful baroque Church of Italy. Today makes me cry my heart walk in the aisle and see bare on the ceiling which was decorated by the greatest masterpiece of Luca Giordano. Yet this place has lost none of its mystique and beauty. Check back in tiptoes, pausing in silent reflection, in front of the entrance where stands the inscription "PAX":

  • We have witnessed the 10.30 mass with Gregorian chants. Quite impressive. The Abbey is very nice and tidy. Forces admiration and fascination. Touching the vision of the panorama on the Hill of the Polish Cemetery. Nice and cheap the Museum attached to the Abbey, euro 3 for groups from 10 persons
