Monte Cassino, Cassino
(4.5/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Built on the site of a sixth-century monastery, Monte Cassino was designed by some of southeastern Europe's finest artists before its papal consecration in 1041. The abbey has been restored since its destruction in 1944 during the Battle of Monte Cassino. View relics, mosaics, manuscripts, and other artifacts as you wander the hallways and courtyards. The hike to the monastery, which is on a 520 m (1,706 ft) high hill, is extremely steep. Plan to take public transportation to the top. • Beautiful place to get in touch with history. Interesting Museum where you can also watch a document explaining the battle of Monte Cassino and its history. Recommended if you want to spend a few hours in the peace of the Abbey.

  • Aperitivo this jewel of Abbey. The atmosphere of piety and peace really out of the ordinary. Despite the reconstruction this place has retained its charm and well worth a visit. Beware of narrow opening hours if you want to visit the Museum. Excellent handmade products for sale in the shop. If you want to walk from Cassino the walk is unfortunately little reported but with a bit of goodwill and a comfortable shoe prepares the mind to appreciate the magnificent work that hangs over the country.
