Monte Cassino, Cassino

(1,200+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Built on the site of a sixth-century monastery, Monte Cassino was designed by some of southeastern Europe's finest artists before its papal consecration in 1041. The abbey has been restored since its destruction in 1944 during the Battle of Monte Cassino. View relics, mosaics, manuscripts, and other artifacts as you wander the hallways and courtyards. The hike to the monastery, which is on a 520 m (1,706 ft) high hill, is extremely steep. Plan to take public transportation to the top. • What a view from up here! A sacred place, very well maintained and excellent. While there have been various restorations, has not lost its charm, indeed! Tranquility and peace, with a fabulous view if you find yourselves in.. passed by here and you will not regret it very nice and especially the Polish Cemetery, near the Abbey.

  • Taking a tour to Central Italy, this is a destination not to be missed. You breathe in the monastic atmosphere, partly because the shouting of the tourists didn't help, but if you can find a moment of silence, well, then it's different. Do not rush and enjoy every moment. Already the climb and the view of the mighty edifice is a nice time. Kiosks and the Church are remarkable, as the scenery. The cemetery recalls what happened here in 1944.

  • If you're in the area, it is a must to visit the Abbey of Monte Cassino. You will be impressed by the same reconstruction after the devastation of the bombing. The weight of history is present and makes you aware of the horror and the will of men to breathe new life into this place.
