Basilica di Santa Rita, Cascia
(4.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Basilica di Santa Rita is a minor basilica housing the relics of St. Rita, as well as numerous frescoes and bas-reliefs depicting her life and work. Ascend the hill of St. Augustine and climb a short flight of steps to reach the white travertine facade--inside, you'll find ornate works of art, a majestic organ, and the sarcophagus of St. Rita, which lies behind a narrow door leading into the old Church of the Blessed Rita. The marble-based sarcophagus was carved by Eros Pillini, and features four angels representing the cardinal virtues. • I went up to Santurio with great curiosity, having heard the Saint of hopeless cases. The ascent was made comfortable thanks to escalators really excellent. Beyond the chapel in which rests the Holy, I couldn't visit much more because of roadworks. The chapel was literally overrun by pilgrims. I managed to carve out a small space on a bench for a moment of prayer. However, I must point out that my visit was made one day before the earthquake of August 24, so my every word has not experienced any damage caused by the earthquake.

  • Unfortunately I could not get into the Basilica. We left Rome especially to go the Basilica but she is closed due to earthquake of the day 10/30/16. Nowhere had that information, then we enjoy Rocaporena and recommend the devotees of Santa Rita. The Basilica reopens only 02/12. On the outside is really beautiful and walked around the back and found a beautiful statue of Santa Rita. I intend to come back at the next opportunity. The town of Cascia is cute.
