  • This is a wonderful privilege to experience as one of the oldest churches in central Sicily dating back to the time of Count Roger who eventually conquered the whole of Sicily as the invading Normans ...  more »
  • Albeit small, represents a very important testimony of the Arab-Norman medieval art in the area. Built by Augustinian monks in 1092 on an ancient Arabic fortified; outside you can distinguish the square Tower of Arabic building from the rest of the body of the Church. The Interior is simple but impressive, thanks to the fascinating play of light and shade of the Windows that enhance the frescoes (including the Christ pantocrator behind the altar) and the Crucifix of Staglio. The baptismal font, carved from a single block of sandstone was carved in the style of Arab workers who worked in the Abbey. The Abbey is located in open countryside just a few km from the town, close to the archaeological museum.

  • The Abbey of Santo Spirito, the oldest church in Caltanissetta, was initially a fortified farmhouse built by the Arabs around 900 a.d. to garrison the territory of NYSSA. At this his past ' military ' the building retains many traces: the thick walls, the slits where archers hurled their arrows, the square Tower and the gate that protects the door mail slot. With the arrival of the Normans, who, having as main goal besides the conquest of the island also its re-Christianization, transformed the ancient fortress in church to convert the men working in the countryside. In the apse of the altar is painted a different picture of the Savior of the world with his left hand holding a book open with one hand on it "Ego sum lux mundi Qui sequitur me" and on the other "ambulat in tenebris". Years ago has been restored (so to speak) but having been carried out by inexperienced hands, it turns out to be an abomination which has nothing to do with the ancient fresco SHAME That despite always retains undisputed charm. The Church is a destination for many newlyweds they celebrate the wedding. Perhaps the church more "popular" in the city. All in all a magical and charming.

  • The Abbey of Santo Spirito is located in a city on the outskirts of Caltanissetta poorly signposted, but worth looking into, especially if you visit the nearby archaeological museum. Place of worship already in Byzantine times, the Church was consecrated in 1153, and preserves the imprint his Commissioner conferred on it by the Norman Ruggiero. The site retains a special charm because it is a haven of peace compared to the congestion of the city and the Interior, well cared for and preserved, is particularly impressive.
