  • Every time I enter to the market of Saint Benedict is a magical moment. I go mainly to buy the freshest fish you will find many varieties though the market still offers everything from meat to vegetables to bread etc. And a pleasure every time go to buy because the courtesy and simplicity of the people makes you look at your House. Go for it.

  • One of five markets in Cagliari - great for fish and meat (cattle, sheep, horse, rabbit, goat). Also cheese, wine, bread, cake etc etc. People were very friendly despite my appalling lack of Italian, ...  read more »
  • As you enter to the market of Saint Benedict (On Europe's biggest market, source: website of the province of Cagliari, transmission RAI "blue line"), your senses will be persuaded by an explosion of scents, colours and flavours. Walk along the banks of the sellers will be an interesting experience and very informative as well as fun and "interactive". Particularly in the fish Department (the lowest level) where fishermen traditionally invite you to taste and purchase all visitors with colourful and provocative but never vulgar expressions. Even the upstairs is cheerful but decidedly more classical with benches (shops) of butchers, cheese makers, grocers and those of ancient bakeries. An interesting culinary tradition of Cagliari is the horse meat that this market is of excellent quality. Perhaps not everyone knows that, even before the new Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, teatro's reference was to Via Mario De Candia (in the Castello district made several times since 1832), a renowned and respected civic theatre. One of the first artistic directors, finding no better on piazza San Benedetto, he went to the market and noted that most of the camp counsellor attracted the attention of customers by singing loudly smoothly. He thought to recruit some of them (in the end, they were simple fishermen) which, after rapid formation, they performed in the first opera seasons of the theater waiting to cast the real professionals. For tourists, curious travelers and gourmets this is a not to be missed. Ideal for anyone staying in a facility (air bed and breakfast, residence, residence) in which you can cook.
