  • San Pietro di Breme is closely related to the famous Abbey of Novalesa, founded on 30 January 726 from the noble franc Abbo in the heart of Val di Susa overlooking the Via Francigena. Following the assault in a gang of vicious 906 Saracens, the friars fugitives, after a brief stop in Turin, they found safe haven in the "curtis" di Breme and Tom Thumb (near the present cascina Rinalda, striking the Church along the main road). «Breme, which stood on a hill known as "Costa Rubea" at the confluence of the Sesia, Po and was positioned to the monks of Novalesa, fertile and lush setting, was in a strategically secure and also a short distance from the Imperial seat of Pavia. Here Donniverto, last Abbot of Novalesa and built a monastery which was first di Breme, dedicated to St Peter, like the one recently dropped out. " With the conquest in 1306 di Breme by militias of Galeazzo Visconti began a relentless decline of the Abbey, both in the decision of the Dukes of Milan to make a strong military garrison, Breme, both because of the frequent encroachments and especially of rampant nepotism by some families, like the famous leader casalese Facino Cane with the three Abbots Lorenzo (1381) , Lodovico (1423) and Domenico (1427). And so in 1784, after 879 years of life, one of the most famous abbeys received the coup de grace with the Decree of suppression enacted by the King of Sardinia Victor Amadeus III and the consequent reduction in the Napoleonic era of the Abbey Church, which has already been demolished and unsafe. But what remains (and was largely restored) is exciting and proves the constant influx at views that organizes the Mayor Berzero. Parking in the Town Hall Square, courtyard of the cloister, at the bottom of a hole, steps carved into the wall, we must not lower (almost) head here to jump one thousand, eleven hundred years. The crypt is a Romanesque church, many bricks are made from large hollow funeral parlor (energizes the skimming them), striking the four stone columns, one of which is veined white marble may have come, like pieces of recovery, from Roman buildings (Lomello is very and bream was part of the Augustan regio XI). Near the entrance to a window allows us to poke around in a second area, privately owned we conclude the visit to the complex with the well and the great cuisine of the friars (here we are in the middle ages, suggestive lighting); then we go on the opposite side of the complex with the icebox and many salt recovered at aqueduct to a Museum of memory that is just beginning. Congratulations.

  • Built in 929 by Benedictine monks, the present building dates from the 16th century. Beautiful cloister and the crypt. To visit the kitchen of the friars. Not to be missed!

  • If you are a visitor from Certosa di Pavia or one of the many Italian monasteries still in operation, you may feel a pizzixo disappointed. Here the Abbey is little more than a ruin, it lacks even the Church. What remains is still fairly valued and preserved. Congratulations to Cpmune who keep the site almost always open and making it free and open access. A series of well-placed panels take visitors and illustrate the site from historical and architectural point of view. If you pass by here is worth a visit.

  • The current municipality of Breme was the entrance to the monastery. The entire complex, identified as SAINT PETER'S ABBEY is well worth ' seeing. In the middle ages this abbey was one of the three most important of the Empire. Doubtless Breme is one of the most interesting countries of lower lomellina. The cloister is preserved and charming is the crypt and the kitchen of the friars open during the opening hours of the municipal offices or during special occasions such as the third/fourth Sunday in June, when red onion Festival is held annually in Breme, a treat that you can only find here.
