Lake Bolsena, Bolsena

(4.6/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Lake Bolsena is a crater lake of central Italy, of volcanic origin, which began to collect 370,000 years ago following the formation of a caldera in the Vulsini volcanic complex. Roman historic records indicate activity of the Vulsini volcano occurred as recently as 104 BC; it has been dormant since then. The two islands in the southern part of the lake were formed by underwater eruptions following the collapse that created the caldera. The lake is supplied entirely from the aquifer, rainfall and runoff, with one outlet at the southern end. A sewage treatment plant filters most of the raw sewage from the surrounding communities. Constructed in 1996, it features pipelines transporting the sewage from every major community around the lake to the treatment plant on the Marta River; that is, no effluents enter the lake. Fertilizers are a second source of contamination. However, the chemical content of the lake is monitored at several stations around it.Lying within the northern part of the province of Viterbo that is called Alto Lazio ("Upper Latium") or Tuscia, the lake has a long historic tradition. The Romans called it Lacus Volsinii, adapting the Etruscan name, Velzna, of the last Etruscan city to hold out against Rome, which was translocated after 264 BC, and its original location today has not been securely identified. The lake is bordered on one side by updated forms of the Roman consular road Via Cassia. In addition to the historic sites of all periods, Lake Bolsena is currently surrounded by numerous tourist establishments, largely for camping, agrotourism and bed and breakfasts.

  • Staid in Bolsena. We took advantage of a trip to a small ferry (I don't know it, I don't mean of vessels). It was at the end of the season and the owner says that it was broken but I wanted to finish the season, the bottom line we breathed exhaust for over an hour ... terrible! Then the bars are filled by vending machines and slot machines that give a bad feeling of social decay. The Hotel definitely dated. Sin, the Lake is beautiful and the food is good and some is cheaper and tourist area of nearby Tuscany, though the services are really scarce

  • Arrived at the Lake by accident, decided to show places in the neighborhood and decided to stop at the Lake. Came at night and immediately realized, choosing the right. Very beautiful Lake around so many hydrangeas, huge caps! Cute boats, swans, fishing, here goes fishing Championships. Water is clean, we did not plan to bathe because spent ten days at sea, but went to the beach every morning. Around the Lake there are many eating places, houses, hotels, camping, for every taste. Many dishes in the restaurants of Lake fish Looked not anything planned, so how much time is spent on the Lake. Come back many times!

  • It truly is the most beautiful Lake of Central Italy, in an environment (one of the few remaining) still untouched. Beautiful villages overlooking the lake where you can still feel that air paesana of 50 and more years ago, a clear water, a nature where you can still immerse yourself in complete relaxation, a fauna that is not afraid of man and approaches again very close. Great place that I hope to stay that long. The best seasons to visit it and enjoy it in complete relaxation are spring and autumn. For those who love the Lake, the Sun, bathing and boating, the holiday season is a paradise. In short, every season has its advantages ... I forgot the winter: quiet, charming and even romantic in the few but welcoming open structures.
