  • I lived in Bologna for 5 years and I was able to get to know this beautiful city by turning it on foot, a city on a human scale very attractive.

  • At the beginning of Strada Maggiore and a few steps from two towers rises this Church, very ancient origin that they say would have been founded by Saint Petronius in 432 on the site where it seems to meet the first Christians of Bologna (dedicated to the Apostle San Bartolomeo) dedicated to San Bartolomeo e Gaetano. Passing on the porch one cannot fail to notice the door with transparent glass, allowing you to admire already from outside what the Church inside, an invitation to enter ... ... ... ... .... But there is still a bit of story to tell: about 1288 it is said already to a small church with the façade towards Porta Ravegnana. In the second half of the 16th century, next to the Church, the Gozzadini family planned the construction (entrusting the task to Andrew from Formigine) of a large Palace and including renovating the Church. Unfortunately the murder of Giovanni Gozzadini (now Archdeacon prior) meant the project remained unfinished. Of that great project today remains only the beautiful porch with decorations designed by Andrea from Formigine (carved out of sandstone and unfortunately deteriorated by time). This porch but became part of the new project of rebuilding of the Church by the Theatine Fathers who took over the Regency of the Church in 1599. The Fahad designed the Church from scratch (with entrance on Strada Maggiore) planning as well a big expansion. In 1671 when he was canonized St. Gaetano (founder of the order of Theatine Fathers) fathers thought that this would be an important opportunity to make known their founder, and so they decided to beautify their church with frescoes by m. Fernandes and l. Qadri who decorated the porch with ten lunettes (today very damaged) with the facts of the life of St. Gaetano. The Church was later renamed Saint Bartholomew and Saint cajetan. In 1694 it was completed with the dome and Bell Tower. Under the portico in front of the two towers you can admire a beautiful century portal with statue of St. Bartholomew. The Interior of the Church is very elegant and harmonic (and totally frescoed) with beautiful fluted columns and chapels, left and right, each topped by Dome frescoed. In the afternoon you can find a beautiful light that gives a very warm golden color. Bolognese Baroque style is not particularly redundant but sober and classic and leaves room for all the masterpieces that are located here. Very interesting the Annunciation, f. Albani (one of the best students of the Carracci) which can be seen in one of the chapels on the right. This altarpiece is especially known by the nickname "Albani of fairest Angel". Stop to admire it. ... The famous and beautiful oval of Guido Reni "La Madonna del Suffragio" currently is placed on the right of the main altar. Admire the cupola with frescoes on the vault of the nave of F.lli Rolli and stories from the life of St. Gaetano of A.M. column and collaborators. The Church is also known for the many concerts held within it, there is also an important organ situated in a choir loft above the entrance which dates to 1644.

  • Internally very lit and with music in the background, beautiful terracotta Nativity scene made up of five statues and place near the altar. Church began in 1516 and completed in 1627 by the Theatine fathers. The lunettes of the porch are decorated with scenes from the life of Saint Gaetano and the 15th century portal has been recovered from the previous Church. Very nice also the organ above the central door. Six chapels on each side.
