Further history of the monastery (from its origins in the Lombard period by the Irish monk Columbanus who later became Saint) of while magnificent architecture, makes it a must visit this place. It was well into the middle ages one of the most important monastic centres of Europe thanks to Italy's most famous library containing manuscripts which Columbanus had brought from Ireland and the treaties of which he himself authored (the fame of Bobbio reached even Ireland, where the memory of Columban was worshipped). The present basilica was built between 1456 and 1522. The Abbey of the monastery is composed of several buildings in the realities for civilian use. The restoration and the heavy stucco arcades and the crypt were made partly decaying charm of a structure so ancient. Scarce information available for visitors. Not to be missed.

Living nearby, and desiring to show to a friend my guest a rare historical gem, this year I went to Bobbio for visiting San Colombano. Unfortunately I have seen once again how it is neglected by those who should look after it and value it. We found it completely empty of brochures or guides for visiting, things normally found in any place that has even a modicum of historical or artistic importance. Do not pretend to find free material available (we'd purchased again), but at least available. To get some information essential to visit we could rely solely on a small folding hung on your wall. I find it unacceptable, even in view of the fact that many of the tourists who visit are foreigners. Let's really a picture of neglect and indifference. As if that weren't enough automatic switch (surcharge) of lights that illuminamo the mosaics (perhaps the main artwork of the Abbey) that day (?) weren't working and individual tourists have lost their money without being able to see anything, you couldn't even read the descriptions. Around no one to ask for explanations or help. I don't give a star only for the intrinsic beauty and charm of the place, but to whom should occuparsenene say, "shame!"
