It was founded in 780 ad on the site of the center of the ancient Roman city and was dedicated to St Mary; the original temple was rebuilt, enlarged and transformed several times and that is why the Cathedral of Benevento never had a unity of style. Of the old structures of the temple after the post-war makeover remain in situ the façade and the Bell Tower. What has saved has been carefully restored and is currently preserved in the Diocesan Museum or relocated in the spaces of the new Cathedral. Inside the Cathedral, you can admire the extraordinary cast bronze door of the 12th century remodeled and restored, regarded by art historians as one of the highest expressions of medieval southern Italy art.show original
