  • Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria de Episcopio, this is the "name" of the Cathedral of Benevento. First Christian Church of the city rebuilt in the VIII century by the Lombard Duke, after the Goth King Totila had destroyed. In the mid-10th century Pope John XIII States the city seat of Archbishopric, an early Archpriests of Europe. The earthquakes of 1456, 5 \ 06 \ 1688 destroyed it completely. The Bishop of the city, Vincenzo Maria Orsini, later Pope Benedict XIII rebuilt it, but the earthquake of 1702 the severely damaged and once again had to be refitted, but with heavy losses. In 1943, 4 days after the Armistice, the Americans, with great pleasure, bombed the city that took 4000 deaths, destroyed the Cathedral and the old town badly damaged. Benevento is also gold medal for its population and its complimentary martyrdoms suffered by stunning works of art. On 10 August 1910 he was ordained in the Cathedral of Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, today san Pio. This Cathedral has still a priceless treasure that the beneventans captured from the Germans, the bronze doors. In the world there are more than four similar works, one is in Bamberg in Germany, capital of the Swabians, in other words of Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick II said Stupor Mundi that Benevento papal stole, destroyed it and then the submission to the Holy See had to rebuild. Here was made much history of Europe and then the world. The façade is almost remained intact, looking at the monument, in the top right corner you will see a statue of a warrior monk kneeling posture leaning on Templar sword with a cross engraved on his chest. Benevento didn't miss anything. The rest such as the catacombs, discover them going to Benevento.

  • The cathedral stands the imposing main citizen at the beginning of the course and within denotes a feeling of "clean" but it does seem pretty empty. Nice to see.

  • Is the Cathedral of Benevento that with its bronze doors makes everything much more wonderful and idyllic

  • The Cathedral is not just a place of worship; with the reopening of 2012 what was supposed to be renovation turned out to be also carrying out a spectacular project of "lighting design": a crane, scaffolding and uprooted even floors inside: this was a real industrial renovation in the body of a giant of 2 thousand square meters. The result is breathtaking.
