Arco di Traiano, Benevento

(4.7/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Get a rare snapshot of Roman history at Arco di Traiano, a majestic Roman monument commemorating Emperor Trajan. Since its construction between 114 and 117, the 16 m (54 ft) tall limestone arch has been restored several times, but the original craftsmanship prevails. Its barrel-vaulted archway features entablatures that depict its namesake's triumphs through detailed sculptures and carvings into the stone. Further scenes and allegories of imperial Roman activities are inscribed on the columns. Originally marking the entrance to the city, this impeccably preserved arch stands casting its shadows onto the town below. Arco di Traiano is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Benevento Edition.

  • I'd heard of Benevento in an excellent way but I did not believe that in such a small space there could be so many historical monuments. Beautiful city, beautiful environment that everyone should visit once in a lifetime

  • The Arch of Trajan is really impressive and suggestive, especially at night; is located about halfway down the course in a side street. Not to be missed!

  • Symbol of Benevento, well preserved testimony of Roman civilization. It was built to celebrate the Emperor Trajan at the opening of the via Appia road that connected Rome to Brindisi, around the year 114. For its size, was for centuries called "Golden Gate". And Trajan is remembered as "Optimus" enlightened Prince whose fame has come intact to the present day. The rich sculptural decoration shows different themes on each side: the inner one, overlooking the city and citizens will appeal to peace and Providence while the outer one which looks to the provinces refers to war and to the provisions of the emperor. Roman history, gorgeous

  • Tourist stop to one of the most important monuments of the city. You should also visit the nearby Museum of the Arch of Trajan in the Deconsecrated Church of Sant'Ilario in via San Pasquale.
