Arco di Traiano, Benevento

Get a rare snapshot of Roman history at Arco di Traiano, a majestic Roman monument commemorating Emperor Trajan. Since its construction between 114 and 117, the 16 m (54 ft) tall limestone arch has been restored several times, but the original craftsmanship prevails. Its barrel-vaulted archway features entablatures that depict its namesake's triumphs through detailed sculptures and carvings into the stone. Further scenes and allegories of imperial Roman activities are inscribed on the columns. Originally marking the entrance to the city, this impeccably preserved arch stands casting its shadows onto the town below. • Walk through the narrow streets of Benevento. The arc appears at the end of a street with all its Majesty. Not too big but effective.

  • The impressive arch, to a single vault housing be entirely covered in Parian marble, which in the past served as a gateway to the city from which you branched off the via Appia Traiana, is the focal point of the main street of the historic center of Benevento. The arc because of historical courses and resorts suffered extensive damage from the Lombard period it was incorporated into the city walls that operation would undermine the integrity of the building, but were later earthquakes to wear down Trajan arch in part that is remiss of the decoration on the parapet. The arc underwent numerous renovations which allowed to preserve the memory of this structure, the most significant was in 1850, during the visit, in Benevento, Pope Pius IX. The magnificence of the whole building is of course given by the decorations, even if the scenes are crowded, the facades show decorations definitely produce carefully made by great masters. The façade overlooking via Traiano, consists of six decorative panels which depict the Emperor Trajan; the façade towards the Church of Sant'Ilario, via San Pasquale view the glories and the triumphs of Traiano in Dacia is in Germany. The most interesting decoration are located in the inner sides of FORNIX where Trajan's activities are represented in the city of Benevento: the opening of the via Traiana (109 ad) and the establishment of the Institute alimentaria (101 a.d.) in the city of Benevento. The latter was created by the emperor Nerva and consisted, essentially, in loans granted by the farmers, the beneficiaries of that loan, in return they mortgaged their land; mortgage interest, were local farmers, municipalities, or transfer to special officials, the entire payment was then used for the upkeep of children of both sexes. This type of policy, designed in the period antinoniniamo stimulated both productivity is the increase in population, also we could define these rules completely revolutionary for its time. I conclude by arguing that if visiting in Benevento, besides tasting local dishes, immerse yourself in the history and beauty of this city and the neighboring countries!

  • It is not only the symbol of Benevento, but also the reference point of a journey that has lasted for millennia, the via Appia here which ended in its first stop coming from Rome, and from there again to Toast and then, crossing the Adriatic to Durres to Constantinople, calling themselves via Egnatia. This ARC telling Trajan's victory on the populations of Dacia (modern Romania) is an absolute masterpiece of sculpture and harmony of composition and reading several stories is facilitated by the installation which is located in the nearby church of Sant'Ilario in Golden door, highly recommended! Stay to admire the night is thrilling. Not to be missed!
