i Giardini di Villa Melzi, Bellagio
(4.5/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
A strip of gardens that line the lakeshore on the Bellagio peninsula, i Giardini di Villa Melzi is a manicured landscape that was once the playground of Francesco Melzi d'Eril, duke of Lodi and the vice president of the Italian Republic in the early 19th century. The Neoclassical villa and chapel set off the colors of the garden. A greenhouse, called the orangery, is home to a collection of artifacts from the Napoleonic period and other rare archaeological finds. On the other side of the grounds, bamboo surrounds a chapel to create a place quiet meditation. • We visited the gardens on an overcast, misty day in October and they were still beautiful. The colors in the Japanese maples around the water garden were astounding.

  • Wonderful collection of specimen plants from all over the world, planted long ago and cultivated over time. Best viewed from early to mid April when the thick azalea bushes are blooming (the timing depends on the weather). The villa is still owned by a family and is not open to view. The villa itself has an interesting history. All done in truly refined Italian style.
  • Incredible! Built in 1800s so more access to flora from all over the world. Massive Sequoias from California, Japan, China, pine trees from different parts of Mexico. Luxuriant and peaceful
  • Nice gardens to stop and have lunch in when in Bellagio. Great views over the lake with plenty of seating
  • The garden is very nice nearby the sea. Take a book and sit on the bench to fully enjoy the magic atmosphere
  • Beautiful gardens to visit. One of the highlights of Como and definitely the only one thing to do in Belaggio
