In the territory of Barberino Val d ' Elsa stands the ancient Pieve di Sant'Appiano (the Saint to whom we owe, according to legend, the evangelization of the Val d'Elsa. The first written mention dates back to the 9th century, although few traces remain of the original complex. The Church, with three naves; the two aisles are separated from the Central, on the one hand by columns, the other by pillars, joined to the other by arches. There are still some works of Philip Filippelli (a "Saint Peter Martyr" and a "St. Anthony Abbot and Saint Matthew the Evangelist), but above all a" martyrdom of Saint Sebastian "by Bernardo Rosselli. In the back of the Church, there are still some testimonies (four columns) of the ancient baptistery. Unfortunately it is not always accessible and suffers from the lack of proper maintenance, which is a shame because the short visit is interesting and shows one of the many little treasures on our territory.

The parish church is worth a ride even though it is not easy to find it open to visit the Interior. The pillars in front of the façade, they leave to the imagination certainly past tense

This church, a few Kms from Barberino, is venerable both for its antiquity and for art features. The church is well preserved; it shows a clear difference between the left side, which is the oldest (X...  more »

The Pieve di Sant'Appiano is located near Barberino Val d'Elsa: characteristic is the image of its façade fronted by some particular columns, which are nothing but the columns that held a very ancient Baptistry, which was demolished in the 19th century because it was dangerous. The Church is in Romanesque style, with unadorned façade showing a turn of the century XVIII Portal surmounted by a funnel-shaped window. The Church has a Basilica plan with three naves open and divided by arches and pillars, with a large central apse and two side with crypt below. Beautiful the capitals of the columns, while the nave ends with an altar, resting on columns, behind which lies the apse, in the center of which opens a small window. Opened in June 1991, a small Antiquarium housed in premises annexed to the parish: consists of two rooms which collect part of the archaeological material from the surrounding areas: particularly important is the idol in sandstone that represents the God Eros astride an animal.

Very beautiful church, especially the "minimalist" Interior and original of the period. Impressive remains of the porch
