Santuario di Montevergine, Avellino

(4.3/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Established as a place of meditation by sixth-century hermit William di Vercelli, Santuario di Montevergine is the sacred site of Madonna of Montevergine, and is visited by over a million and a half pilgrims each year. Approaching the ancient site, you'll see the modern-day cathedral's Romanesque bell tower rising up above the trees. Inside, three reverberant naves lead up to the marble altar, which houses the painting of the Madonna. Hainal's polychrome marble bas-reliefs in bronze and mosaic complete the ornate altar scene. A Gothic portal takes you to the 13th-century basilica, which features more intricate art with scenes of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the angels. As you make your way back down the mountain, you'll find a bazaar with tasty local fruits, and delicacies like torrone. A visit to Santuario di Montevergine represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Avellino travel itinerary maker to plot your vacation.

  • Road with many curves but still easy d apercorrere and well maintained, plenty of room for parking but I do not recommend to go there on Sunday, penerete a bit to Park, the Sanctuary has two faces in my opinion the old much mystique the new part personally I did not like too futuristic painting of Madonna trasmentte a remarkable sense of peace and has a magnetic eyes.

  • The picture of our Lady was shifted and earlier had a greater effect, but the location does not change what is the magic of the shrine. Shame about the funicular that doesn't work. But it's always worth a visit. Thanks Madoninna of Montevergine.

  • I've been several times in this sanctuary, is now a must. Immersed in the province of Avellino, all very impressive. Besides the beauty of the shrine itself, you can visit, around Christmas, the Nativity scenes from around the world that will form the backdrop. I recommend it to everyone to visit at least once.

  • This is a old USAF Communications Site. Santuario Di Montevergine is down the hill a bit.
  • I returned to Montevergine after 68 years! I went there as a child (9 years old) Catholic, walk from Castelpotoi. We came back from Evangelica Valdese. It was exciting, too bad for danger landslides, everything was closed. The Basilica and sanctuary were fortunately open. A lot of news! I would go back to see everything open and take the funicular, hopefully the age permitted by me again!

  • Magic place: history, religion and tradition come together on the top of Mount Partenio. Wonderful view.

  • Church wide and cool in the summer is the ideal place to find peace and serenity. Large parking lot near the shrine. Interesting Museum of sacred objects.
