Santa Maria degli Angeli, Assisi

Santa Maria degli Angeli, on the Umbrian plains near Assisi, is the birthplace of Christianity's Franciscan Order. The intricately frescoed basilica stands 75 m (246 ft) high. A carved tree trunk holds the altar in the building's crypt. You can view St. Francis of Assisi's rope belt, as well as his deathbed in the Capello del Transito, where he died in 1226. • A visit to Assisi is not complete if you skip the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porziuncola. You can imagine the times of Saint Francis as it was here that he founded the order of the friars minors, approximately in 1208 - 1209. In this sacred place, one can feels an extraordinary inner peace which boosts even the unfaithful.
  • I've never been there personally. My sister gifted me a wooden cross with ASSISI engraved on the cross. I believe she had it Blessed at The Vatican. May we all receive Blessings from this Sacred area. Thank you Lord and Forgive Our Inequities. Peace be with us all, Jeff
  • Overwhelmingly beautiful complex filled with extraordinary works of art. The side chapels off the central Nave rival the porziuncola and the Cappella del Rosario with their impressive fresco cycles by a variety of artists.
  • Very nice place to understand a bit the vocation of St. Francis of Assisi.
  • Magnifica Porziuncola
