San Damiano, Assisi

(4.8/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecosystems, is said to have been praying at San Damiano in 1205, when the structure was in disrepair. While kneeling, he saw a vision that told him to rebuild the church. The interior of the cathedral has a single nave, one circular rose window, and a wooden crucifix dating back to 1637. Although St. Francis' history here attracts visitors, it is primarily a place devoted to humble tranquility. Take a look at our Assisi tourist route planner to schedule your visit to San Damiano and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Other key place in the life of St. Francis and St. Clare. There is an air of peace and spirituality, very poignant visit to the Refectory, proper, the oratory held as originally, the dorm room where you see marked the place where the Saint is dead. The Church invites to silence and meditation, while the cloister and the landscape open their hearts and they understand how we could inspire San Francesco in the creation of the Canticle of the creatures.

  • A very spiritual place. A place of retreat, of introspection, reflection and silence. Our days there with prayer and song, were wonderful.
