4.8/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web
Set in a gorge on Monte Subasio, Eremo della Carceri served as a place of worship and solitude for St. Francis of Assisi during the 13th century. Explore the paths and archways of the retreat, which have been expanded over the centuries since St. Francis' death. Admire the complex's stonework, set on a hillside at an elevation of 791 m (2,595 ft). Wind your way through inner courtyards and small chapels to the cave of St. Francis. A small group of Franciscan monks use the monastery now. The hike up to the monastery—even from the parking lot—is somewhat steep. • Amazing scenery, it is incredible to walk into the cave where St. Francis lived...a must see when you are in Assisi!
  • It was a rainy afternoon and very cool crisp air with birds chirping. It wasn't difficult to see how Francis could come up here to be with the Lord away from the Assisi crowd.
  • This is a wonderful spot to really sense some of Saint Francis atmosfere. Just to walk sit and feel.
  • Amazingly simple and evocative place. For the more daring advice to have her walk away from Assisi, for a emotion only once in the silent and hidden Hermitage. Attention to paths inside the area of the Hermitage, some are dangerous and experts only.
