Duomo di San Rufino, Assisi

4.6
#7 of 16 in Historic Sites in Assisi
Architectural Building Religious Site
A visit to Duomo di San Rufino will have you at the doors of one of the most important churches in the history of the Franciscan order. It is also famous for being the church in which Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and many of their disciples were baptized. The cathedral originated in the 12th century, after the bishop of Assisi had a miraculous vision. The Romanesque facade is a typical example of 12th-century Umbrian churches, and is divided into three levels featuring highly decorative friezes. Visit the famous font inside, and at the same time take a look at the underground crypt, which houses a Roman sarcophagus from the third century. • Very nice on the outside, unfortunately very bare on the inside! Very interesting remains of the original Church placed under glass plates in the floor. On a personal level I have to say I sent few emotions! Too bad!

  • Many believe that Assisi Cathedral is the Basilica of San Francesco, which is a mistake. The Cathedral of Assisi lies on the opposite side of the city, and is dedicated to San Rufino, Catholic martyr of the 3rd century, and the first bishop of Assisi. His body is buried in the central altar. The Church was built in the 12th century, under project of Giovanni da Gubbio. The external façade is one of the most significant works of the style "Umbrian Romanesque". In 1571 the interior was restored by Galeazzo Alessi, remaining so until today. It has three naves divided by pillars, with two transepts, an apse and a central altar, plus ten altars and two chapels, richly decorated.

  • The beautiful Cathedral, in the square of the same name, where there is also the birthplace of St. Clare. External impose and solemn, the Interior has been renovated over the centuries and now the Church inside has a Renaissance aspects, no longer as before. However it remains a beautiful church.

  • Great, if not slightly overrated. I guess you have to be a romantic or religious to really appreciate it, neither of which I am! Still, the scenery is marvellous and it's a great day out. I think it's one of the key places that everyone should visit if you go to Italy as it has real historical significance.
  • This is a beautiful cathedral and the courtyard in front of it is an area where Saint Francis preached.
  • Interesting place to visit during a sightseeing Assisi.
  • Stunning cathedral in a magical place...
  • Worth stopping and checking out
