Just amazing! Assisi was our favorite place in Italy. The Basilica was a key part of what we enjoyed there. Walking around the grounds, we learned new things about Saint Francis. We enjoyed the artifacts. Visiting Saint Francis’ tomb felt especially holy. We went to confession and Mass. it was a spectacular experience!
Very beautiful and interesting. We had a tour guide when we where here which I would definitely recommend so you can get the story of the city and Francis of Assisi. Even if you aren't religious, his story is fascinating and inspiring. The artwork in the church is beautiful and interesting. The views from outside of the surrounding country are beautiful.
I love the basilica and praying at Saint Frances' tomb, but I found that there are way to many tourist that are going that have no clue what all this means. They are not even going to have a spiritual moment, just looking around. Very crowded and annoying 😒. Other than the crowds of tourist groups blocking me and my wheelchair into a corner for 15+ minutes until someone who was there for the right reasons helped my husband guide me out of the mess. FYI most tourists are very rude and inconsiderate even of the handicapped in a church. Even after watching the video of "how to get around Assisi in a wheelchair" it was still EXTREMELY difficult (glad my brother-in-law joined us to help push), the roads are beyond steep!!! If you are unable to leave your wheelchair and walk down steps, you will not be able to see the tomb. I always try to post about handicap restrooms, this one was definite plus (5 star!!) There was an elevator to take you down to a lower level that has vending machines w/ tables and large restrooms. The attendant unlockeded a handicapped one just for me. If you can leave your wheelchair, I suggest it because it is a little tight. Of course while I was down there the elevator stopped working. I think to many people are using the elevator that don't need to, THE ELEVATOR IS FOR THE HANDICAPPED USE!!!!!
One of my favorite churches period. Truly lovely. Not sure how St Francisco would have felt. He would have been sitting under a tree nearby I’m fairly certain.
I was in tears. Seeing Giottos work in such a magnificent building. It was simply epic on all accounts. The art, architecture and scale... Always trying out on the scale of these places. Would return again.
