Basilica di Santa Chiara, Assisi

(4.7/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
See the original Cross of San Damiano, which is duplicated all over town, at Basilica di Santa Chiara. This church is dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a founder of the Order of Poor Ladies (now the Order of Saint Clare). Admire the simple pink and white stone facade. The basilica is quite plain compared to other Italian churches, in keeping with Saint Clare’s humble lifestyle. Descend into the crypt and see a statue of Saint Clare, a display of her relics, and art depicting her life. • The Basilica of Saint Clare, is not only a religious destination, but, like the Basilica of St Francis, is a spiritual place that harmonizes with the world around you ... you have to visit it, not necessarily being Catholic to appreciate the spirituality that surrounds it!

  • The architectural style of the basilica of Saint Clare is linked to that of the basilica of San Francesco. Outside the façade stands out for its horizontal bands, made with local stone white and pink, and the left side is characterized by the presence of three large buttresses that give breath to the full façade, while being "mighty". The crypt contains relics (both of Santa Chiara which di San Francesco) and the urn containing the remains of Saint Clare. The Interior has a single nave is very bright; the chapels are decorated with splendid frescoes.

  • I was a Sunday to visit this church with family and friends. Very impressive, striking to see the crucifix that spoke to St. Francis, as well as the doublet and the body of St. Clare. It feels really alone. The frescoes and stained-glass Windows are beautiful.

  • Great place to visit for some history on St. Francis and St. Clare. The original San Damiano cross is here.
  • Beautiful! On a piazza overlooking Umbria.
  • Very powerful and historical place. Spent hours in the plaza.
  • Less important than Francisco basilica but so much important if you have to understand Assise
  • Beautiful!
