Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web
See the original Cross of San Damiano, which is duplicated all over town, at Basilica di Santa Chiara. This church is dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a founder of the Order of Poor Ladies (now the Order of Saint Clare). Admire the simple pink and white stone facade. The basilica is quite plain compared to other Italian churches, in keeping with Saint Clare’s humble lifestyle. Descend into the crypt and see a statue of Saint Clare, a display of her relics, and art depicting her life. • This great basilica with majestic arches is located on the area where the old chapel of St. George, which was the site of the first burial of Francis and Clare. Gothic style interior, nel1257, was started after 4 years after the death of the Saint and two years after his canonization. Here there is the presence of Santa Chiara material, but especially spiritual in its simplicity. Two places are the culmination of this basilica: the crypt that preserves the sarcophagus with the body of St. Clare, discovered in 1850; and the Oratory of the crucifix that retains the Byzantine Christ in 1206 in the Church of San Damiano, spoke to Saint Francis.

  • The basilica of St Claire I dedicate his life to the Church and to Saint Francis at the porziuncola, overlooking a beautiful square from which we can observe a beautiful panorama over the Valley towards the below Santa maria angeli. Inside you can admire the Church of San Damiano crucifix that spoke to Saint Francis to rebuild the Church. Don't miss the relics in the crypt where beyond the grave of the Saint are the robes, tonic and used items from two great Saints.

  • The visit to Assisi is not only the Basilica of St Francis, but unique in this country, there are a number of historical and religious sites, historical and cultural importance. Among others, certainly the Basilica of Saint Clare, in the homonymous square in the middle of the country. The basilica of Santa Chiara is an imposing building, consecrated in 1265 in Italian Gothic style, supported by arches, buttresses, and is constructed with rows of stones of white and red zone, with a wonderful portal. The Interior has a Latin cross with frescoed chapels. On one side the chapel of St. George, with the Crucifix of San Damiano, which spoke to Saint Francis, and the crypt with the relics and the tomb of Saint Clare.
