Religious Site
In the center of Ascoli Piceno in the Arringo square is Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Emidio. Originally built during the eighth century, the cathedral was continually restored and modified over the centuries, with the addition of towers, extensions, and art pieces. The interior's dome is adorned with a 19th-century fresco by Cesare Mariani representing the history of Saint Emidio, the patron saint of Ascoli Piceno. Also of great interest is the polyptych altarpiece kept in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Designed by Renaissance artist Carlo Crivelli, it is considered the most important work of the goldsmiths of the Marches. • The exterior of this building is stunning, built of white travertine but is best seen at night when it's features are finely defined. This is a lovely cathedral with some fine interior decoration and ...  more »

  • From outside it doesn't seem but inside is gorgeous! Inside is a marvel! The structure is a Latin cross, the Interior is in Romanesque-Gothic style, but from the outside it looks just Romanesque, is divided into three naves. The vault of the cupola, the vaults of the aisles and apse are stunning and frescoed by Cesare Mariani in the years between 1884 and 1894. Noteworthy and exceptional the altarpiece of St emidius by Carlo Crivelli in the chapel of the sacrament (the right one). Also the beautiful Crypt
