Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio, Ascoli Piceno

(4.8/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
In the center of Ascoli Piceno in the Arringo square is Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Emidio. Originally built during the eighth century, the cathedral was continually restored and modified over the centuries, with the addition of towers, extensions, and art pieces. The interior's dome is adorned with a 19th-century fresco by Cesare Mariani representing the history of Saint Emidio, the patron saint of Ascoli Piceno. Also of great interest is the polyptych altarpiece kept in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Designed by Renaissance artist Carlo Crivelli, it is considered the most important work of the goldsmiths of the Marches. • Its construction began between the fourth and fifth centuries, on an existing building from Roman times, some archaeological finds such as the "tronchetto", the "gate of apses", confirm this hypothesis. The façade dominatrix of the square, was built between 1529 and 1539, designed by Master Cola Of Amatrice, the extremes of travertine façade rise the Romanesque towers, while on one hip Renaissance opens "Door of the muses". Its interior is full of works of art, for that very reason visited by many tourists. Above the altar, enriched by a precious sixteenth-century gilded wooden Tabernacle, we find the famous and beautiful "polyptych of Crivelli" in underlying crypt, the relics of St. Emidio, patron saint of the city of Ascoli.

  • From outside it doesn't seem but inside is gorgeous! Inside is a marvel! The structure is a Latin cross, the Interior is in Romanesque-Gothic style, but from the outside it looks just Romanesque, is divided into three naves. The vault of the cupola, the vaults of the aisles and apse are stunning and frescoed by Cesare Mariani in the years between 1884 and 1894. Noteworthy and exceptional the altarpiece of St emidius by Carlo Crivelli in the chapel of the sacrament (the right one). Also the beautiful Crypt
