San Francesco, Arezzo, Arezzo

#2 of 16 in Historic Sites in Arezzo
The relatively simple interior decor of sets off the famous fresco--Legends of the True Cross--that adorns its walls. Some of the small frescoes in the niches date back to the 14th century. Before you get to these, you'll pass under a crucifix suspended with a Madonna in Majesty. The basilica's main cathedral features a single, large nave with chapels on either side. Beneath this cathedral, a chiesa inferiore (lower church) displays temporary exhibits paying homage to the city and the church's history. • Piero della Francesca's account of the story of the cross is an excellent reason to stop in Arezzo.

  • There are many wonders in the world but this Church like all those Franciscans would all deserve to be recognized as a World Heritage Site ! This in particular, located in the heart of the city of Arezzo, has the unlined facade where inside preserves in the main chapel called "Bacci Chapel" the Clients were precisely the Bacci affluent family, who commissioned the Master of light, color, perspective Piero della Francesca the pictorial cycle, one of the most famous in the world, dedicated to the extraordinary "Legend of the True Cross" inspired by the text written by Jacopo da Varagine (Varazze) "Legend Aurea". In this church we write one of the most important pages of the History of Art where it allows us to see and compare the painting of 1350 of the School of Spinello Aretino present in the walls of the outer perimeter of the Chapel and precisely the extraordinary " painting revolution" undertaken by Piero exactly a hundred years later from the 1450.Il wonderful "flower garden" of Piero as he described it for the first time Gabriele D'Annunzio. The colors "pastello", the sky of "Toscana" for the outdoor scenes, the "divine" light in the Dream of Emperor Constantine, the meticulous and perfect description of sumptuous dresses and fashionable hats that remind us of the Council of Florence of 1439. Piero della Francesca the perfect "Renaissance chronicler". Just 30 minutes for the visit accordingly I recommend you use every single minute to admire this great, unique, extraordinary masterpiece reminding you that reading the frescoes starts from right to left as if they were browsed pages of the book and that the scenes are perfectly matched see for example the two scenes of the battles that are facing each other together in a perfect mathematical calculation. Thank you Piero! Thank you Maestro!

  • A piece of my heart will forever be in Arezzo. It is a wonderful slice of Italy, providing all the art and history, but off the over trod path if most tourists.
  • Interesting church, pity that the procedures to see churches and art nowadays has turned into an internet visit followed by a queue, pay a comparable high entrance fee and then see the paintings in, understandably dim light, questioning the value of an original visit compared to much more impressive web only visit.......
  • Good stained glass windows & ceiling paintings. In the crypt there was an exhibition of Style & Costume in Italy 1900-1960 which was very interesting with some fine exhibits & a nice fresco ceiling.
  • Very nice
  • Beautiful old church with some beautiful frescoes. Worth a quick visit walking through town.
