  • Named after the most famous son of Arezzo in Roman times, that Patron friend and Advisor of Augustus, which as you know is built on the Esquiline Hill the sumptuous gardens that he took the name, is located in what was once the convent of the olivetans, built on the ruins of the cavea of the adjacent Amphitheater. The visit is advisable, because it contains interesting finds and then, on the first Sunday of the month, admission is free, as also in the amphitheatre. The visitor is greeted by a statue of togato luni marble (I hope to publish the photo) wearing the capsa, the container for the headers and then this attribute qualifies it as a magistrate or an important public official. Stylistic examination completely, the toga, and the characters ' realistic ' face (worked separately) place it in the period of late Republican portrait and precisely in the years between 25 and 50 AV. CR. The statue was placed in a funerary monument fonts to newsstand which fragments have been found in and around. Unfortunately no inscription has reached us that they can recognize the name of the portrayed, definitely a character to rank high (as I said before) that could afford then a burial worthy of its status. Noteworthy also a terracotta head from the second century BC. Christ, witness the arrival in Etruscan environment of artistic experiences of derivation parchment, sorted from Rome, when the city, following the conquest of the Hellenistic kingdoms, came in contact with the fine art of those countries from which poured into Italy fine artists. In 1827 was found in località Marciano an Etruscan necropolis from which originate a male torso (7th century av. CR.) separate position which was to depict a Warrior (according to a well-known iconography) a Sphinx and a lion (mid-6th century BC. CR.) In the archaic period had spread in Etruria using put before real or imaginary animal figures and tombs of men according to guardians and to symbolize the transition between life and death. This practice was particularly widespread in the territory of Chiusi from which come such finds. Always from the same city, comes an ossuary (Canopus) with male head in clay that was placed to the whole of the tombs and dated the first quarter of the 6th century BC. Also of interest is a locket product with the technique of chrysography (crisos = gold and graphè = write). Finally, for reasons of space, we mark a male portrait probably of Drusus who conquered Roman weapons the Retia (av 15 year. CR.) (with photos ... Deo gratias) and an attic red-figured volute crater, (always with photos, deo gratias..)

  • A much bigger and more interesting collection than we'd expected, in a historically evocative setting (a former monastery built onto the side of the city's ancient Roman arena). Hardly anyone goes, an...  more »
  • This museum is right next to the ancient amphitheatre. It has two floors which give you a nice overview of the finds in and around Arezzo. It is a pity that there is no air conditioning is, because it's warm there.
