  • After the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and St. John the Baptist, this is the second most important place of worship in the city and together constitute the most important in the history of religious art in the val d'Aosta. Realized as a simple Church, a single Hall with a semicircular apse, in the early Christian era on a burial ground (along with the nearby church of Saint Lawrence) was rebuilt and later enlarged, first around the 9th century, then in the first decade of the 11th century, when it took its present form, typical forms of Romanesque architecture: three naves covered by a wooden trusses, closed with semicircular apses. Unfortunately during our visit we couldn't see (but we will recover soon) two of the most important artistic treasures inside the religious complex of Sant'Orso: the ancient frescoes Ottonian stored between the roof and the roof of the nave and cloister with its beautiful medieval capitals ... Though we could see the mosaic, uncovered during excavations in 1999, located in front of the main altar and the beautiful 15th-century wooden choir stalls, made in Gothic style and richly decorated: two rows of seats on either side of the apse, the highest of which has carved Apostles alternated with prophets, while the panels that surround the several seats and on small holders made under the seats are reproduced animal figures , monsters, monks, soldiers. At the end of the right aisle, a few steps lead to the crypt, the oldest part of the collegiate church, which has been preserved almost in its entirety and presenting Hall divided into five aisles and three semicircular apses; Here, beneath the high altar in stone that holds the statue of Sant'Orso (right between the altar and the floor) is a curious and little step: according to the ancient tradition every 1 February, feast of the Patron Saint, the faithful line up to be able to crawl inside the Sant'Orso ' hole ' ... this because they believe that face heal from backache and, in the case of women , promote fertility. Catholics think this happens by divine grace, some scholars instead speak of benefit due to terrestrial energy flows ... what I can say is that, despite not being passed under the altar of Sant'Orso, after we left the Collegiate Church had a very busy day, but we haven't experienced any fatigue ... suggestion? ... can it be, though at the time of entering into the crypt still weren't sure of its beneficial function , has been revealed to us only the day after by local friends. Mystical, mysterious and full of artistic ... Not To Be Missed!

  • the collegiate church has several points of interest but the frescoes in the attic are worth a specific survey, interesting architecture and the setting in the city that deserves not only for Roman remains, the arc to the hole the door pretoria.

  • Don't miss the cloister; jewel of the monumental complex of Sant'Orso, accessible through a doorway opened on the right side of the façade. The capitals, sculpted in marble, symbolic of the new and old testament scenes depict admirably, the life of Sant'Orso, characters and fantastic animals or contain different stationery. Are considered among the highest expressions of Romanesque sculpture.
