Rocca di Angera, Angera

(4.3/5 based on 55+ reviews on the web)
The Rocca Borromeo di Angera, or Rocca d'Angera, also called Borromeo Castle, is a castle that stands on a lakeside hilltop in the limits of the town of Angera in the Province of Varese on the Southern shores of Lago Maggiore. It is visible from across the lake from Arona, where originally stood another castle formerly owned by the Borromeo family. Before 1227, the castle belonged to the Della Torre family, who lost the possession to the Visconti after the Battle of Desio (1277). In 1449, it passed into the ownership of the Borromeo family. It once belonged to the Visconti family, beginning with Bernabò Visconti and his wife, Beatrice della Scala. but it was purchased by the Borromeo family who expanded and refurbished the castle over the centuries. It still belongs to the Borromeo family. It is best known for it Hall of Justice (Sala di Giustizia) which still contains its original late 13th century depicting the victory of Ottone Visconti, archbishop of Milan, at the Battle of Desio. The castle suffered damage during bombardment in the second world war.The castle also contains a Museo della Bambola (Doll Museum), founded in 1988 by the wish of Princess Bona Borromeo Arese, and displays over a thousand dolls made between the 18th century and the present day.

  • Get the rock is not very difficult: If you have a car it will take about ten minutes. I don't know if there are coaches that accompany the stranded, but during the summer months there are not, then we've done on foot ... uphill! A grind brutal for those not accustomed to extended hikes (you must take the roads uphill), but we did discover the historic centre of Angera. Once you arrive at Rocca had no time to visit, because the reduced hours. The price per ticket, according to me is disproportionate to what it offers: 9.50 € per person without a guide or audio guide. Once past the Ticket Office welcomes the medieval garden with a breathtaking view of the Lake and the town of Arona. Inside the fortress is kept very well (recently refurbished to a famous wedding Borromeo) and offers a visit of various rooms and salons, narrated briefly by individual signs at the entrance. The visit is also open to the upper floors (beware of steep wooden stairs) where the view will become almost 360 degrees. In addition to visiting the various rooms, the fortress also offers entry to the doll and Toy Museum which can be interesting. Recommend a visit early in the morning, perhaps with tickets already in hand to jump a queue and a little guide made by itself, because there is nothing like this on the site.

  • Awesome lake view from the top of the castle. Nice museum of toys from all over the world. Especially we liked the section of the retro doll houses. We made a journey from Arona to Angera on the ferry boat, and then walked to the castle. The way is a little bit long, and all the time up, so consider it, if you are planning to go there in a hot summer day.
  • Very beautiful castle including a puppet museum. Definitely worth a visit. :) For 10€ you will get the possibility to have a perfect sight over the lake and its surroundings.
  • Doll & Toy Museum is AWESOME. My daughter, age 6, and I had a great experience walking through the castle (which is also beautiful). Dolls and toys from all over the world, including their histories. We could well have spent all day at the castle and on the grounds. Unforgettable experience.
  • A fortress turned into a doll museum...but the view of the Lake Maggiore from it is amazing!!
  • Closed from October to March and no indication neither on the official website, nor on Google. The only way to find out is to go there...
