Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu, Alghero

3.5
#1 of 82 in Things to do in Alghero
Explore ancient cave dwellings on the Island of Sardinia at Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu. Discovered by fishermen in the 18th century, the cave is just above sea level and accessible only when the water is calm via a steep staircase cut into sheer cliff wall. Take a guided tour through the narrow, 4 km (2.5 mi) long cave system to admire the stalagmite and stalactite formations. You can take a boat to the cave from the port of Alghero to view the island's coastline from the water. Put Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu into our Alghero travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Very spectacular cave system. It can be reached by road ( if you are happy to climb down and back up the 624 odd steps from the cliff top) or boat. It is worth visiting, but avoid peak times as the bo...  more »

This cave is really beautiful. We chose to go by sea, with one of the companies that offer the crossing, which allows to make beautiful pictures of the city of Alghero and Capo Caccia (to return). The whole thing takes about 2 h 30. So we took the shuttle from the port of Alghero at 10: 00, for a return to the lunch hour, it was perfect. Predict if possible sneakers to make the visit, and choose a "quiet" day (without too much wind) If you're like us a little sensitive to the level of seasickness.

Personally we did that the descent of the markets to admire the view. The descent is easy. Queue huge in low because rough seas and no boat was sailing. The lift is accessible. Don't forget the water. Other caves in Sardinia we have amazed so we didn't want to test this one which seems expensive to me. Nice seller of magnets on the esplanade. It's original and cheaper than in the city! 2-€3 the magnet. Parking: Let's do the climb up to the esplanade and take the places that are released along the cliff-side rocks. On the esplanade it turned around, and it remains more to find a place on the descent but with a niche on the left. Easy! Nice view of a Genoese Tower or Aragonese against down the road.

Where to stay in Alghero

Compared to Sardinia's other resorts, Alghero offers refreshingly unpretentious lodgings, with comfortable rooms, good food, and friendly locals willing to share insider's tips about the best beaches, clubs, and restaurants. Staying in the compact town center can be quite pricey, but it's the best way to stay close to both good beaches and the most popular nightclubs. If budget is a concern, explore small hotels in the suburbs.
