Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu, Alghero

(3.5/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Explore ancient cave dwellings on the Island of Sardinia at Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu. Discovered by fishermen in the 18th century, the cave is just above sea level and accessible only when the water is calm via a steep staircase cut into sheer cliff wall. Take a guided tour through the narrow, 4 km (2.5 mi) long cave system to admire the stalagmite and stalactite formations. You can take a boat to the cave from the port of Alghero to view the island's coastline from the water. • I was very impressed with these caves, and I noticed a beautiful combination of crystal clear sea of Sardinia and the glow of the minerals present in the caves. A bit disorganised ferry organization but it is still worthwhile.

  • We were recommended to visit the grotto of Neptune, and arriving, person and the access is closed. Big disappointment that we have compensated by a ballad on the road 50 m before arriving and that leads to a military field. After a nice walk, perspective is the appointment even if is not access to the cave.

  • The sea or the stairs? We chose to arrive by sea at the start of Alghero. The boat docks in the cave and there, the wonder begins. It goes up and down, but it is very large and well put in value. I hesitated ("oh still a cave!"), but I have not regretted. On the other hand, it is better to be in good shape for access by stairs (and especially for then join the car). If it's hot outside, remember to take a sweater.
