  • The old part of the castle dates back to the 12th century when the dynasty of Saint Martin was saying in the area of Canavese. Previously there was a defensive structure which was transformed 1646 by order of count Filippo San Martino. In 1763 the castle was acquired by the Savoy for the second son of Carlo Emanuele III, Benedetto Maria Maurizio, Duke of Chablais. The structure is then transformed and revitalized. The village itself was involved in extensive renewal program, with the construction of the Church, connected to the Castle by a covered Gallery with two floors, which still exists. The gardens and the park were also improved. During the Napoleonic domination the castle was emptied of all its furniture and objects, only a marble table failed to take away since walled ....! Finally Napoleon's troops turned it into hospice, the Park was parcelled out and sold to private individuals. In 1823 he returned in his own Royal estates and two years later began the last update of the apartments, built by King Carlo Felice. The castle was again appointed by court artists. Particular the Hall Tuscolana, where they remain placed the finds in the villa of Frascati, owned by Charles Felix and Queen Maria Cristina. In the second half of the nineteenth century it was reequipped the Green Gallery. Beautiful the blue room, the frescoes on the walls, the wallpapers with bright, red bedroom with 4 different strings which sounded different in very distant bells to call the servants. Present 2 ghosts who roam around during the day. It was sold to the State in 1939 for 7 million pounds (a civilian House at the time bought with 18/20 thousand lire), the castle was designed as a Museum of itself, leaving unchanged the structures and furnishings. During the summer they'll do a different ride, taking you to visit the kitchens. Nice little theatre where he recited the poet Guido Gozzano's mother, who lived in Moscow in the early 1900 's and if you have some time, go and visit his residence a few kilometres: Villa Meleto. Friendly staff who accompany and check for tourists, but is devoted to descriptions and detailed stories and for this please remember to leave a small tip ...

  • Since the Carnival parade on Sunday was postponed, we found ourselves with the group the donjon seicentisti dresses, we left arms out and walked visiting free, because as I think all the castles of the Fai are open for free the first Sunday of the month. You can visit the Castle alone!!! You have to wait for the guide that directs groups of 10 people maximum. Visit free, as I have now responded to other reviewers, it is only open on the ground floor with 2 long corridors and halls, I liked in particular from games (= I want to play a game of pool) and Japanese (beautiful statues of Indian Goddesses and Samurai); I was impressed even wall paintings with the coronation of King Arduino, the first King of the year one thousand, of which our Canavese is packed with stories, legends, castles and manors, and some statue of 19th-century artist, especially the girl with Marchetti's dog, where alongside an explanatory sign illustrates the beauty ... Just look at the pictures to see it. Only flaw: it was plenty cold especially at the foot, even though we had the boots on their feet. At the entrance, in winter, a video explaining the grounds, while waiting for the Guide.
