  • Really very nice this basilica. We had a little visit to the beginning of a ceremony. A striking Cathedral, large and comfortable, to see!

  • Baroque Basilica, externally decorated with cherubs and statues, internally full of frescoes. Beautiful Ssntissimo Sacramento Chapel. To visit.

  • Emblematic of the Sicilian Baroque, the basilica of San Sebastiano cannot be visited. Already the front elevation appears in all its magnificence to the careless glance of the passing motorist and directed elsewhere (the Church is located along one of the main roads of Acireale. Striking at sunset or with lights in the dusk.

  • Huge church with a beatiful facade. There is a nice little park nearby.
  • The basilica is the most important monument of Acireale, declared a national monument. In December 1990, Pope John Paul II raised to the dignity of a minor basilica. The first site opened in 1609 and the Church completed in 1644 with subsidies and offerings of the faithful. The temple was extensively restored after the earthquake of 1693, between 1699 e1705, assuming its present appearance. The Church was elevated to a collegiate church with Papal Bull of 20 November 1924. The façade designed by Angelo Bellofiore, inlays of Diego and Giovanni Flavetta, has more orders and presents a frieze with fourteen putti holding swags. The Church is preceded by a parapet built in 1754 by Giovan Battista Marini designed by Pietro Paolo Vasta, enriched by statues of characters from the Old Testament: Judith, Jael, David, Joshua, Moses, Aaron, Judas Maccabeus, Gideon, Samson. The Interior has a Latin cross, is rich in frescoes by Pietro Paolo Vasta, built between 1732 and 1736, in the transept and the choir with some scenes from the life of the Saint, in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with scenes from the life of Christ, and in the drum of the dome. Prior to the earthquake of 1693 the sources report the existence of paintings in the Church of Belshazzar, master of Fat Broad. The left side chapel is frescoed by Alessandro D'Anna. From the site of the Basilica.

  • Sicilian baroque gives almost always great works of art and the San Sebastiano Church is no exception to the splendors of the past. The beautiful façade and equally beautiful inside. I recommend a thorough tour and also, if you can, a great conversation with an elderly lady who works with the pastor.
