St. Joseph Church, Nazareth

(4.1/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Thought by many to occupy the site of the carpentry workshop of the husband to Virgin Mary, St. Joseph Church represents a modest example of Romanesque Revival style architecture. Built in 1914, the church covers an underground network of caves and early Crusader church remains. Enter the simple public threshold of the Franciscan Roman Catholic church, and descend the short staircase to the crypt for a glimpse at a small section of the underground system of rock-cut chapel and caves. Notice the recurrence of the figure of Joseph across the church's numerous stained glass windows. Put St. Joseph Church at the forefront of your travel plans using our Nazareth itinerary planner.

  • The Josef church built in the neo-Romanesque style, is located about 200 metres from the Basilica of the Annunciation. It is assumed that Josef had his apartment and carpenter workshop at this point, in which the young Jesus received his training in crafts and worked his first miracle. The small church was built on the site of older buildings (as well as the Church of the Annunciation). A small Grotto beneath the Church serves as a note on a basement once should have heard about upcoming House of Joseph. The interior walls are quite sparse, only on the rear wall of the apse and the side aisles, you can see colorful wall paintings. which represent the Holy family. Worth a visit the Church especially for those looking for a quieter retreat for reflection after the quite bustle in and around the Church of the Annunciation.

  • To see it as it's next to the Church of Annunciation. Otherwise it wouldn't be so interesting. Very nice crypt.  more »

  • A beautifuly built church in this holy place. Worth a visit.
  • On the north side of the Big Basilica is another Franciscan church. In the lower part (crypt) you can see remains of 1st and 2nc century BC, mosaics, a water pit and caves. One of them, according to tradition, was used by Joseph as his workshop.
  • If you in Haifa you must see this Church!
  • Great shots
  • Site that emanates tenderness for the family, there is a mosaic new new! worth photographing.
