Ramon Crater, Mitspe Ramon

Categories: Geologic Formations, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.9/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
A geological formation echoing the region's oceanic past, Ramon Crater lies in the heart of the desert. Covered by water millions of years ago, the crater was carved out and eroded as the sea slowly drained away, leaving the exposed rock you see today. Encounter this stark lunar-like expanse by foot or vehicle, making your way down the 500 m (1,640 ft) deep cavity. Stop off at the visitor center for a more in-depth look at the landform's history. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and avoid hiking in the mid-day heat. A visit to Ramon Crater represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Mitspe Ramon itinerary builder to plot your vacation.

  • It's really worth seeing but probably better to do with a guide so you maximize your time. We really enjoyed it.
  • With the Nabataean cities, certainly a must of a trip in the Negev. The view from the top of the crater is amazing, it's literally like on another planet!

  • Beautiful desert nature reserve as I still haven't seen. There are a number of hiking trails around the Ramon crater. In the warmer months, it is advisable to start hiking early for the hot afternoon hours to be back. Sunrise, sunset and the stars there are beautiful.
