Landmark Tourist Spot
Considered by many Christians to be the final resting place of the mother of Christ, Tomb of the Virgin Mary provides an atmospheric encounter with a 5th-century church. Enter through the 12th-century Crusader facade, winding your way down the staircase to the ancient Byzantine crypt. Containing the ancient empty crypt of the Virgin Mary, it is believed by many to date back to the 1st century CE. Inspect the colorful icons, and don't miss the smoke blackened stone--thought to have been left behind after Mary's ascension to heaven. Where to stay in Jerusalem

Although it lacks a big selection of mid-range options, Jerusalem provides plenty of choices in the top-end hotel category. The Old City contains the bulk of Jerusalem's small hotels, inexpensive hostels, and religious hospices, all of which appeal to budget-conscious travelers. West Jerusalem offers additional options in the form of guesthouses and bigger hotels, some of which boast five-star ratings. If you just need a bed, consider a youth hostel, where you can choose between private and common rooms with Wi-Fi included.

  • Centuries of fill, rubbish dumping, and debris! The entrance was, at one time, the original level of the ground. The tomb itself is empty, and is symbolic in nature. Very interesting, worth a visit!  more »

  • Makes for a good spiritual experience for any Christian. Site in good shape. Well maintained. Friendly religious people.
  • Peaceful place . Good for contemplation.
  • This is a must visit for chirstian pilgrims
  • Super nice!
  • Final stop on the Sandeman's excellant Mount of Olives tour. A fascinating underground Greek Orthodox church - walking down the staircase leading to the presumed tomb is like walking into a smoky, incensed and venerable past.
