Tomb of the Virgin Mary, Jerusalem

4.5
Considered by many Christians to be the final resting place of the mother of Christ, Tomb of the Virgin Mary provides an atmospheric encounter with a 5th-century church. Enter through the 12th-century Crusader facade, winding your way down the staircase to the ancient Byzantine crypt. Containing the ancient empty crypt of the Virgin Mary, it is believed by many to date back to the 1st century CE. Inspect the colorful icons, and don't miss the smoke blackened stone--thought to have been left behind after Mary's ascension to heaven. • The sanctuary is located on the care of the Armenians and Greeks. Slightly dark Temple lit lots of candles and lights. Quiet and peaceful. After descending the stairs down, on the right side there is a tomb of the mother of God, with the rock shelf, where it seems to lay the body of Mary. Admission is free. The few visitors.

  • 8.26.17 - It's cool that the tomb went down relatively deep. There was a service going on while we were there, but when you get to the bottom it's a small area to cover so you can see everything within 5-10 minutes.
  • This is the resting place of the Virgin Mary I haven't went but I encourage others to go

Where to stay in Jerusalem

Although it lacks a big selection of mid-range options, Jerusalem provides plenty of choices in the top-end hotel category. The Old City contains the bulk of Jerusalem's small hotels, inexpensive hostels, and religious hospices, all of which appeal to budget-conscious travelers. West Jerusalem offers additional options in the form of guesthouses and bigger hotels, some of which boast five-star ratings. If you just need a bed, consider a youth hostel, where you can choose between private and common rooms with Wi-Fi included.
