The Garden Tomb, Jerusalem

4.6
Believed by many Christians to be the tomb of Jesus Christ, The Garden Tomb sits at the edge of a hill that many consider Golgotha, the site mentioned in the Gospels as the location of Jesus' crucifixion. Unearthed in 1864, the site acts as an alternative potential burial and resurrection site to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Group guided tours are available every 30 minutes, or individuals may walk the garden alone. Look for self-guiding leaflets at the information counter. • This is an awesome place run by nice people. It is a great island of peace in a kind of chaotic neighborhood. While not the actual place of Christ's burial it does give one an idea of what it must hav...  more »
  • This was a quiet location near the bus terminal and somewhere we you can walk and sit quietly. Lovely shop that is well worth visiting to buy memories.  more »

  • Probably one of my favorite places in all of Israel. Peaceful, solemn, spiritual, beautiful, historic, reflective, inspiring, compelling, instructive, and impactful. If it isn't the authentic location of Jesus burial (and I think it is) , it certainly is a perfect representation of it. The volunteer guides are very polite. The grounds are constantly improving. Multiple locations for groups to partake communion or other short services. The atmosphere is one of reverence. It's a very special place for me. A must visit for every Christan tourist in Israel.
  • I'm not one to have intense spiritual experiences and holy site after holy site in Israel didn't experience one....until the Garden Tomb. There's a variety of factors that contributed to the experience: 1) The fact that this is likely where Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. There are two spots in Jerusalem believed to house Jesus' body, but according to the Bible this one is the most credible location. That alone adds to the experience. 2) The guides do a fantastic experience of giving you the history of the garden tomb as well as stewarding a spiritual experience. Our guide was a British pastor and allowed us to take communion together before entering the tomb. The entrance is free to give everyone the opportunity to experience the tomb. 3) Through the property, tourists from around the world are gathering and singing in their own tongues. it shows how global the Christian church really is. 4) There are plenty of secluded corners to go off into if you need some alone time to reflect. 5) The gift shop is helpful and NOT overpriced. It feels good that they aren't trying to exploit the garden tomb's meaning. If you're in Jerusalem, visit the Garden Tomb, even if you aren't a follower of Jesus.
  • Absolutely love this place! I love that they preach Jesus and the true message the cross. You can feel the Holy Spirt here! This by far was my most memorable location of all the Holy places of my entire trip. It was so peaceful. The staff was amazing. They have everything very nicely organized. You make appointments to visit that prevents long lines and big crowds. The garden was beautiful. The guides volunteer to tell/ tech you about this wonderful location. They provide communion and section off areas for your group. I also purchased the best smelling anointing oil (Lion of Judah) from this gift shop.
  • A lovely walking garden with lovely people staffing it. Many little paths, flowers, trees. An oasis beside the Old City, with many benches and nooks. There is a very evocative first century tomb and an overlook of a possible site of Golgotha. Probably not the actual site, but not out of the question. This is the Protestant version of the Church of the Sepulchre
  • you can see a small cave tomb that is believed to be the tomb that had Jesus’s body for three days until the day of His resurrection. free entrance and free guided tour. my guide was wonderful in guiding us through the whole Biblical story of the death and the resurrection of Jesus. You are encouraged to give offerings but not forced. there is a souvenir shop where you can buy things and you can give your offerings that way, too. definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Jerusalem.
