Old City of Jerusalem, Jerusalem

4.5
#1 of 1,356 in Things to do in Israel
Feel the weight of centuries of history in Old City of Jerusalem, officially designated as a World Heritage Site and appreciated as critically important to believers of the world's three major religions. According to the Hebrew Bible, King David conquered the city from its Jebusite inhabitants in the 11th century BCE. Since then, this urban settlement has served as the heart of the Jewish community and an integral site in Christianity and Islam. Visit all four quarters--the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Armenian quarters each boast distinct cultures, foods, and architectural gems. Find your way through the narrow sloping alleys of Jerusalem to visit major sites like the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Dome of the Rock. • Jerusalem is a city steeped in history, it is incredible to see how Muslims, Jews and Christians live side by side within it as if the city had been frozen in time. It is recommended to do a tour, some are free and then a tip is given to the Guide, really worth it because otherwise there seems to be only souvenir shops. We visited in December and it was cold even raining a bit so it is best to be prepared for this.

  • Love the Old City. Everything is wonderful except the Arab quarter which is dirtier and the vendors are more pushy than anywhere else.  more »

  • Fantastic place, just like the whole old town area.
  • The old town is very good. Just don't forget to bring his card. We have forgotten and very long blukali long and narrow streets as in the maze. We went there in early June and has already been freakishly hot. Take plenty of water and panamku on the head. Market and crowds dissipated after 17.00. The wailing wall is staggering. Do not forget to insert the wall paper with desire and go back from her walking backwards, otherwise wish won't come true. Temple of chic, you can walk everywhere. And Yes, the entrances to all places in the old town-free. Prohibitions on photo not available anywhere else.

Where to stay in Jerusalem

Although it lacks a big selection of mid-range options, Jerusalem provides plenty of choices in the top-end hotel category. The Old City contains the bulk of Jerusalem's small hotels, inexpensive hostels, and religious hospices, all of which appeal to budget-conscious travelers. West Jerusalem offers additional options in the form of guesthouses and bigger hotels, some of which boast five-star ratings. If you just need a bed, consider a youth hostel, where you can choose between private and common rooms with Wi-Fi included.
