Jewish Quarter, Jerusalem

Walking through Jewish Quarter, the part of the Old City controlled by Jews, enables visitors to weave through ancient history and consider modern Jewish life. The neighborhood, built over centuries entirely out of beige Jerusalem stone, is maze-like. It contains four historic and monumental synagogues among many smaller houses of prayer and seminaries, colonnaded Roman ruins unearthed in the center of the quarter, and the entrances to the Western Wall and the ancient Jewish archaeological sites nearby. Try to wear shoes with a lot of traction: the streets are also made of Jerusalem stone, slippery from centuries of footsteps.
