Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu, Jerusalem
(4.6/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu owes its significance to its location on the spot where the Romans imprisoned Jesus before his crucifixion. The church, its present structure built in 1931, commemorates the repentance of St. Peter after he denounced Jesus three times. A golden rooster sits on the sanctuary roof, and numerous artworks and inscriptions depict scenes from the New Testament. Overlooking the walled city of Jerusalem from the slopes of Mount Zion, the church site provides panoramic views, while an old staircase that Jesus might have used leads down to the Kidron valley on the north side. • Beyond the faith where human weakness can become instrument of the Lord, is a very interesting place above the House of Caiaphas, surrounded by remnants of the Roman period including the tracks from the Lord. Enter the cistern/prison where he was locked up is an unforgettable experience. Also do not miss the layout of the city during the Constantinian period to understand points of Jesus ' life and beyond.

  • One of the smaller churches we encountered on our trip, but definitely worth a visit as it has a wonderful charm to it.
  • It is a place remained intact and that helps us a remember us the events that happened there. IT seems to me that it's run by the assumptionists today. There is a wonderful view, because the place is pretty perched.
