Tel Dan, Galilee
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
A lush nature reserve on the Israeli border with Syria and Lebanon, Tel Dan offers a mixture of hiking trails and archeological sites. Trek through the green vegetation along a river past rushing cold-water springs, and visit pagan altars where the ancient Tribe of Dan offered animal sacrifices to their gods (look behind the biggest for the bunkers used by Israelis in the Six-Day War). The site also features an Arabic stone grain mill and two ancient city gates--one of them mentioned in a biblical story about Abraham rescuing Lot. Archeological findings from the ancient city of Dan include a broken 9th-century stone with an inscription referring to King David.
