  • The Church was built on the site where Mary went to visit Elizabeth, both pregnant. Is on top of a hill and the ascent is a bit strong but it's worth it. In front of the Church has a wall with numerous plates with the Magnificat.

  • This 2-tiered church clearly stands out from the town below. It is worth the walk up a steep road to get to it. There is a beautiful mosaic facade of Mary visiting Elizabeth. It is believed that this ...  more »
  • The Church (Catholic) of the visitation, is located in Ain Kerem neighborhood of Jerusalem located approximately at 8 km from the old city, in a valley between mountains and hills, surrounded by woods. It was built on the foundations of a crusader Church, built-in turn-where-according to tradition-the home of Zacharias and Elizabeth, the House where Mary went as soon as she learned that her cousin Elizabeth –-was expecting a son; in this House lived, so with the parents of John the Baptist, who escaped the massacre of the innocents ordered by Herod because Elizabeth went into hiding with his son behind a large stone (still visible). All these elements are clearly remember both the courtyard and in two chapels that make up the Church was begun in 1938 and completed in 1955 by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi (who built several churches in the Holy Land, certainly relevant to the pilgrims, but not of the highest quality from an artistic point of view/architecture). All in all, a massive building, in blocks of stone, with a structure – however – quite original: from the backyard you pass under a porch which forms the lower part of the façade (on which is set the mosaic/painting commemorating the journey of Mary from Nazareth to Ain Karim) and, for a short staircase leads to the Church; to the right of the façade and the portico rises the belfry. In the courtyard in front of the entrance to the Church, a statue commemorates the meeting between the two women and the wall in front of the Church is written in more than 40 languages the Magnificat, the prayer-according to the Angel by Luca-by Maria on that occasion; This habit of playing (on ceramic tiles) a text in many languages it is common in the Holy Land and is important because it ensures that each person/Pilgrim participate more easily to what the Church recalls, but for those not on a pilgrimage is likely to be tedious. In the lower Chapel, the walls are decorated with paintings – especially beautiful not-that depict significant episodes of life of Zechariah and Elizabeth. In a niche is the stone (stone of concealment), behind which would be hidden Giovanni Battista to escape the massacre ordered by Herod the great with the intent of hitting Jesus (the massacre of the innocents): one thing certainly impressive (for pilgrims). In the large church at the top level the paintings they intend to glorify Mary and its importance in the history of Christianity: are huge, almost disproportionate and not particularly beautiful, too. Very nice, instead, the floor on which are depicted – mosaic – many animals. In conclusion, a church which constitutes a major step for those on pilgrimage, but little interesting for who is not involved in this type of trip.

  • The Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem, Israel, honors the visit paid by the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.
  • Nice place to visit during a summer day. Beautiful church and lovely restaurant around
  • Beautiful and peaceful
  • The "Church of the Visitation" is a remarkable shrine built in the 1950's in Ein-Karem, near Jerusalem. It commemorates by Catholic tradition the place where Mary visited Elizabeth and blessed her (Luke 1).
