En Gedi Nature Reserve, Dead Sea Region

4.6
#2 of 20 in Things to do in Dead Sea Region
Unwind at David Falls and admire an ancient mosaic of the synagogue at En Gedi Nature Reserve, a tranquil nature resort featuring two year-round streams. Covering 1,400 hectares (3,459 acres), the area's convenient facilities and diverse plant and animal life make it one of the most popular nature sites in Israel. Take a dip in a pond of a limestone cavity, climb cliffs overlooking the Dead Sea, and explore Dodim Cave with a window on the lake. Acacias and palm trees provide necessary shade, and you might encounter Nubian ibexes at close quarters. Bear in mind, all the while, that you are at an elevation of 423-200 m (1,388-656 ft) below sea level. Not to be missed! Under sweltering heat, you climb, descend stairs, trudge between rocks and land on a refreshing waterfall. Along the way you can you cool down with cool water. For the more adventurous, after the cascade of David choose between back down towards the exit or go back on an adventure. Well we have a shot, but for novices like me, 500 meters have got to me. I found myself paralyzed by the vacuum and the turn around. So attention to the second path after the great cascade, should not get dizzy and be somewhat accustomed to hiking. Otherwise, really, you can't go back from the dead sea without coming to see this nature reserve. We arrived around 10:30 and it's very nice because we were virtually alone. During our descent to return, the cascades were overrun. !!! Don't forget hats, sunscreen, shoes (sneakers will suffice) and plenty of water. Good ride, you will not regret it. Stroller to banish, who had taken people from wearing them all along: unworkable.

We spent a quick 2 hours hiking the trails here, with a few dips into the water. Quite beautiful and a great place to be on a summer day. Wear a bathing suit, there are swimming spots.  more »
