The Church of the Twelve Apostles, Capernaum

(5/5 based on 50+ reviews on the web)
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles is a Greek Orthodox church located near the shore of the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum in Israel. It is also known as simply the Greek Orthodox church at Capernaum, to differentiate it from the nearby Franciscan monastery. Often it is named as the Church of the Seven Apostles, based on the seven disciples mentioned in John 21; another name is Church of the Twelve Apostles.SignificanceThe church marks the site of the ancient village of Capernaum, which is an important place in Christianity. The village is frequently mentioned in the Gospels and was Jesus' main base during his Galilean ministry. It is referred to as Jesus' own city and a place where he lived. It was in the synagogue of Capernaum where he first started to preach. Those who claim that the church is dedicated the seven apostles (or rather five apostles and two more disciples), base it on the Gospel of John, chapter 21. If it is dedicated to all twelve apostles, this would also make sense due to the long stay of Jesus and his closest disciples in Capernaum. In any case, the church is situated in the more recent, north-eastern part of the ruined village, which was where the inhabitants relocated after the destruction of the old town from the time of Jesus, as a result of either the earthquake of 749 or of a man-made event of the 7th or 8th century.

  • A little unusual in appearance for Russians, Church of the Greek Patriarchate. But what a delightful world created around her. A lovely small park, beautiful trees, peacocks (at least one), an award-winning landscape and indescribable, literally divine view of the Lake (sea of Galilee). It is understandable why Jesus began his divine activities. soul sings in this place! Near the residence of Peter the Apostle (or rather the place where there are the remains of the House where supposedly lived Peter) the Interior of the Church is described separately. The first thing you feel going into the Temple of harmony. All interior rich and multicolored-frescos, icons, chandeliers, chandeliers, metal and wooden carvings matched so skillfully and with such taste that merges into a single, unique picture and essence, penetrating into you and fill all your soul. At least that's what I feel!

  • As in all places of the Holy Land, the pitiful struggles between latinos and Orthodox makes in each center of Holiness, there are two areas that should not be missed. The same thing in Capernaum. Away from the road, don't miss this beautiful church of the Apostles, well-preserved and according to the characteristics of all Greek Orthodox Church. But it is also located in a space of a tranquillity that is strange in crowded spaces Catholic so visited and sometimes so little respected by visitors. So you can take advantage of to make a stop along the way, and rest under one of the arcades that provide shade and give much idea of how it must have been the Galilee in the time of Jesus.

  • The outside of this church (including the grounds and gardens) is impressive and beautiful, but what awaits you inside is AWESOME. The paintings and murals are spectacular and so colorful and rich. I ...  more »
