The Church of the Twelve Apostles, Capernaum

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles is a Greek Orthodox church located near the shore of the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum in Israel. It is also known as simply the Greek Orthodox church at Capernaum, to differentiate it from the nearby Franciscan monastery. Often it is named as the Church of the Seven Apostles, based on the seven disciples mentioned in John 21; another name is Church of the Twelve Apostles.SignificanceThe church marks the site of the ancient village of Capernaum, which is an important place in Christianity. The village is frequently mentioned in the Gospels and was Jesus' main base during his Galilean ministry. It is referred to as Jesus' own city and a place where he lived. It was in the synagogue of Capernaum where he first started to preach. Those who claim that the church is dedicated the seven apostles (or rather five apostles and two more disciples), base it on the Gospel of John, chapter 21. If it is dedicated to all twelve apostles, this would also make sense due to the long stay of Jesus and his closest disciples in Capernaum. In any case, the church is situated in the more recent, north-eastern part of the ruined village, which was where the inhabitants relocated after the destruction of the old town from the time of Jesus, as a result of either the earthquake of 749 or of a man-made event of the 7th or 8th century.

We have visited the church before and always try to stop by when in the Sea of Galilee region. It is a Greek Orthodox Church in Capernaum, just next to, but with a different entrance from, the Francis...  more »

Absolutely worth seeing, yet alone the location unbeatable. Caution: at the end of visiting time is shut off radically. We were still short on the shores of the Lake and then found ourselves locked up in the monastery courtyard. Someone else came to happiness to clean the toilets, who then let us... :)))

Where to stay in Capernaum

Capernaum itself offers no accommodations, with the ruins of the village thankfully left undisturbed by modern developments. Visitors usually stay in the large town of Tiberias, itself a fascinating place with Biblical history. Look along the shoreline of Tiberias for some of the more upscale resorts and hotels, with many offering their own tours of the Sea of Galilee and Capernaum. For more budget-friendly options, go farther inland and look along the side streets that run off Highway 77.
