Church of the Multiplication, Capernaum

4.3
#4 of 7 in Things to do in Capernaum
On the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee stands Church of the Multiplication, where some believe Jesus fed 5,000 with just a few loaves of bread and two fish. Constructed in the style of Byzantine architecture and opened in 1982, this modern church occupies the site of two previous 4th- and 5th-century churches. Walk through the central nave, paying special attention to the preserved 5th-century floor mosaics--some of the earliest examples of of Christian art in the Holy Land. In front of the altar, the mosaics seem to depict the Gospel's fish and loaves miracle. • Another stop on our Sea of Galilee tour. We saw a beautiful icon inside with candles. Wine press in courtyard. Great stop.  more »
  • The Church of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes is very beautiful and interesting to watch a rock that's in the middle that would be the place where Jesus would have done the multiplication. You can light a candle for 1NIS.

Where to stay in Capernaum

Capernaum itself offers no accommodations, with the ruins of the village thankfully left undisturbed by modern developments. Visitors usually stay in the large town of Tiberias, itself a fascinating place with Biblical history. Look along the shoreline of Tiberias for some of the more upscale resorts and hotels, with many offering their own tours of the Sea of Galilee and Capernaum. For more budget-friendly options, go farther inland and look along the side streets that run off Highway 77.
