  • We saw again "Twin Church of Wexford" this summer, June 2017, during our vacation in Ireland. History says that in January of 1850, Reverend Myles Murphy, PP, Bishop of Ferns (1850 - 1856), died 1857, made a proposal to address the needs of a large urban Catholic Congregation in Wexford town, that "two new Catholic. Churches" are to be erected in Wexford. It was stipulated that the churches were to be built to an identical design - "to prevent jealousy and unpleasant comparison amongst the town people." It was the Very Rev. James Roche, (1801 -1883), Parish Priest (from June 1850) of Wexford who was closely associated in building, furnishing and securing financial resources necessary for the construction of the Twin Churches. Richard Pierce of Kilmore (1801-54), architect, was commisioned to design the 2 churches. He was also involved in the design & building of a number of well known architectural buildings & churches in Ireland. "Twin churches" was designed in Gothic Revival style. I think that the interior is almost the same except the main altars, the Church of Immaculate Conception, "Rowe Street Church", has a more intricate, traditional & beautiful sculptures & Holy Images in the main altar while the Church of the Assumption, "Bride Street Church", has a modern styled main altar. Both churches has numbers of Holy Images, large & splendid organs and numerous stained glass windows. Both churches are worth visiting several times.
  • The same on the outside but different on the inside, it's worth the visit.
