#5 of 16 in Tours in Westport
Croagh Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, is a 764m mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo, Ireland. It is 8km from Westport, above the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. It is the third highest mountain in County Mayo after Mweelrea and Nephin. It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year, which is the last Sunday in July. It forms the southern part of a U-shaped valley created by a glacier flowing into Clew Bay in the last Ice Age. Croagh Patrick is part of a longer east-west ridge; the westernmost peak is called Ben Gorm.NameCroagh Patrick comes from the Irish Cruach Phádraig meaning " Patrick's stack". It is known locally as "the Reek", a Hiberno-English word for a "rick" or "stack". In pagan times it was known as Cruachán Aigle or Cruach Aigle, being mentioned by that name in sources such as Cath Maige Tuired, Buile Shuibhne, The Metrical Dindshenchas, and the Annals of Ulster entry for the year 1113. Cruachán is simply a diminutive of cruach "stack", but it is not certain what Aigle means. It is either from the Latin loan aquila "eagle" or a person's name. In addition to its literal meaning, cruach in the pagan name may also have some connection with Crom Cruach.

  • Our children were today during a ride with this. Although the age difference is quite large (18, 15, and 5 years) what was there for everyone and all 3 were thrilled. Booking and settlement via Facebook Messenger schell was smooth, easy, practical and reliable. Upon arrival was remembers made reservations and all were warmly greeted and immediately equipped with helmets. Then it was the horses down to the sea. Beautiful, Clew Bay front with the Croagh Patrick in the back. Again, reasonable price. When you post right after the tide wondering at low tide, it should be even more beautiful!

  • Beautiful ride on horseback for the whole family. The horses adapted to the possibilities of the riders. During the same turn experienced riders can do several splendid gallops on the beach while the less experienced people may quietly continue their walk at no. Dream setting between Croagh Patrick mountain and sea gulls and oystercatchers pies. All this in an atmosphere relaxed with smiling and friendly companions. I would highly recommend this activity for a good moment of joy and relaxation
