Waterford

4.1
Specialty Museums · Architectural Buildings · Biking Trails
Ireland's oldest city, Waterford maintains its small-town charm and attracts a growing number of travelers with its rich history, lively nightlife, and thriving festival scene. Founded by Viking settlers over a thousand years ago, the city straddles the Suir River some 15 km (9 mi) from the coast. Although some districts retain their medieval look and character, farther away from the historical town center Waterford shows off its modern face with a network of neat streets lined with trendy bistros and upscale boutiques. Part of the "Sunny South East" region, the city reports lots of sunshine throughout the year, making it one of the country's most popular weekend getaway sites. Where to stay in Waterford

There aren't an overwhelming number of places to stay in the city center of Waterford, so consider looking into options in the surrounding neighborhoods. There are a few hotels, smaller lodgings, and a hostel in the heart of the city--the Norman quarter. However, as you venture outside the city center you'll find many traditional bed and breakfasts, cottage-style guesthouses, and family-owned accommodations. The city is easy to get around, so if you stay in a more commercial area, you will still be able to experience the magic of its medieval streets and fortifications.
