Ring of Kerry Golf Club, Templenoe

#6 of 19 in Golf in County Kerry
Bring your "A" game to Ring of Kerry Golf Club, where you can play a challenging course with outstanding views of Kenmare Bay. Nestled between the Caha Mountains and MacGillycuddy Reeks, the course represents one of the final projects by Eddie Hackett, a legendary architect who described his design process as an attempt to "dress up what the Good Lord provides." Hackett's appreciation for natural landscapes remains evident in this course, where the scenery works with the layout to provide a memorable setting for golf. The club bar/restaurant serves pizza and burgers with more exceptional views. • Who knew this would be a highlight of our trip?!?! We made a reservation to play 9-holes (options offered are for 9 holes or 18 holes ... I'm not a great golfer but that didn't matter). From Kenmare, ...  more »

  • I want to say more positive things about Ring of Kerry Golf Club but my most recent visit has dampened my enthusiasm from previous visits. For one thing, no one was there the day we stopped for lunch at the very nice clubhouse/restaurant when the weather was good. We booked to play on Sunday at 12:30 and no one was there then either. We felt like we were entering the twilight zone on the first tee. The course is hard with lots on elevations and moguls on the fairways, which were not well groomed. The greens were the best part of the course and were in good shape. The sand traps are appalling. Most of them are hardened dirt and some had stones. Most did not even have rakes. There are lots of blind shots with tricky approaches. The views are beautiful, which almost makes up for the poor condition of the course. The greens fee of €75 is shocking given the golf experience. You get much better value at Kenmare (€50) or Beaufort (€40). And for €25 more you can play Killeen. With an infusion of money, this could be a spectacular course, but right now I can’t recommend it.
