Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Sligo

4.0
Cemetery · Ruin
Explore one of Ireland's largest and oldest cemeteries of megalithic tombs at Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. The site is home to over 60 tombs, some up to 5,000 years old; 30 monuments are visible today. Begin your visit at the information center, where an exhibition helps provide the context for this ancient complex. Once you've learned about the area's rich history, set off for the Listoghill cairn, the focal point of the cemetery, surrounded by smaller satellite tombs. Wear sensible shoes, as the area features uneven terrain. The site can be quite challenging for those with mobility problems. • It wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but we found it interesting. Sadly the information centre was closed to the public and even though the man was there, he said he was not allowed to give us a...  more »
  • Lovely short walk up the mountain to this site. Super scenes and lovey countryside. Take a camera with you. It normally takes between an hour a d half to reach and return down. Sligo has some great.....  more »
  • This is a lovely walk/climb up to the Megalithic Cemetery. This is a tough walk, I’d recommend good walking gear and a change of t-shirt 😰. You’d want to be reasonably fit as it’s a steep climb on...  more »

  • If you make it here, you must do the guided tour. Our tour guide explained why this area is important and if you don't do the tour it just looks like a field with some grass covered mounds. The guide explained it very thoroughly in and interesting way. Without the guide you're not going to get much out of it. You'll learn a lot about this particular site and about the history of Ireland in general.
  • An absolutely wonderful historic site in Ireland with views of several cairn and plenty of small stone circles. Parking is free and there is a small fee for entry. We went in the early morning and enjoyed a coffee from the excellent coffee truck stationed outside.
  • Very good docent. He gave us a great deal of historical information. Very informative! Worth the visit!
  • Some historical attraction have interactive multimedia exhibits. Not here. It's a short but well made exhibition before being sent out to the real history with a laminated page in hand. And it's all the better for it. Explore the site at your own pace, take in the scenery and how the site sits in the landscape at your leisure. I'd suggest picking a sunny day but otherwise it's reasonably priced and genuinely interesting.
  • Some of the coolest prehistoric tombs in Ireland. New Grange is cool, but this if crowds bother you, be sure to come here, since it's almost as cools and way less crowded
