Went here on Saturday afternoon. Tours are only once an hour, so don't arrive at 5 past the hour or you'll have to wait. There is a good bit of history to read as you wait but 1 hour is a long wait. C... read more »

This museum is a special place. Before you go in to the museum take a few minutes to take in the wonderful view which extends to many counties on a clear day. We (Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society) had a lovely tour of the mine with a retired miner. Only five miners left now apparently. These miners (who maintain the mine and make it safe for visitors) with the help of the local community got this museum up and running so we wouldn't forget and to pay tribute to the coal-miner's way of life that was. Our tour of the mines was done with passion tinged with sorrow because of the working conditions these miners worked in and from about 12 years of age too. A testament to the great people who worked here. They will not be forgotten. There is a lovely cafe and shop here also. Maybe to listen/read a few coal mining songs/poems before your visit would be beneficial.
This was one of the best Irish experience I had so far, and I have been living in Ireland for 2,5 years. The tour is given by real ex miners and our tour guide was Michael. When you listen to him you are listening to a quintessential Irish spirit. His descriptions of the mines and their lives were so honest and so heartbreakingly beautiful he has almost brought me to tears... My advice is definitely go there, you will be able to revisit a part of Irish life and tradition that is fascinating to say the least. To move around the dark and cold labyrinth of tunnels with brilliant Michael by your side is an experience to remember and I recommend it deeply!
Got a great tour from one of the miners
Great tour by real miner.
The whole family loved this - the tour guide was really good and made us appreciate how difficult it was for the miners and how we really do not know what hard work is
