  • This is a very educational place to visit and I think it is remarkable how little we know about these institutions given they were so important to our history - good and bad. A sobering visit for the kids, but definitely recommended. We even got a cuppa and a lovely chat after the tour was over. Great to have a place like this open to the public.
  • I visited here during Heritage week. It is an important example of these institutions which were built throughout Ireland in the nineteenth century to cope with massive levels of dire poverty. The buildings are large in scale and some of them have been preserved and are functioning as a fascinating museum. Friendly welcoming staff. Well worth a visit.
  • Very moving. Passionate guide. Well worth visit if doing the picturesque drive around the loch. Forest park nearby also highly recommended.
  • We took a circuitous route back from Galway to Dublin today and came across the Workhouse in Portumna. It was a Very interesting visit, a great way to learn about relatively recent history. Nuala our guide was passionate and very interesting about telling the workhouse story. It should be on a schools day trip agenda easy access from most places. I am sure if anyone has any memorabilia, or stories from workhouse era they couldn't find a more a perfect home and would be very welcomed !
  • Well educated tour guides. Provided the right amount of information and maintained respect for the solemnity of this place.
