  • I'm expect I would have scored the site as excellent if we had visited during the summer as there would have been more going on. The visit was my two grandsons aged 10 and 7, and myself we all enjoyed...  more »
  • I stumbled on Glengowla Mines on a recent visit to Oughterard. My children may have been a bit young to be overly interested in the mine itself (ages 5 and 4); however, they loved all the rocks and fo...  more »
  • The visit to the Glengowla mine was an absolute highlight in front for us. OK, some interest for caves, mines or minerals is provided. Claustrophobia is also unhelpful. Our guide, John, has led us over an hour through the mine, very entertaining, very competent! John has stated very good working conditions in the mine for one hundred and fifty years ago was worked, with candle light, in the dust and dirt, with the noise of metal hammers, which embark on chisels and explosives, which was ignited in the holes. It was fascinating! In addition to the geological knowledge John could of mine tell too much from history, how it started, how much was promoted, and why it came to an end. Very exciting, we found his descriptions of how he and his colleagues again have uncovered the mine in the last few years, and what are the plans for the future. If we should be back in a few years in the area, we will go over in any case. We are curious what John and his colleagues still everything will be free. In any case about 20 m additional depth to the walk-in today 65 m are promised!

  • I visited here with my family in August. There's a small museum (one room with minerals, photos and old mining gear), a gift shop, panning for gems (four zones in the one trough) and the mine itself. The tour starts with getting a helmet on and a brief talk in the museum. Then, it's of down the mine via a concrete staircase. It's not warm or dry down the mine, so do wear good shoes and something warm. The mine tour isn't long, but informative and both my kids enjoyed it.
  • We found this place accidently and absolutly loved our tour!! It was amazing and will recommend to everyone we know!
