I stumbled on Glengowla Mines on a recent visit to Oughterard. My children may have been a bit young to be overly interested in the mine itself (ages 5 and 4); however, they loved all the rocks and fo... read more »

Claustrophobia is also unhelpful. Our guide, John, has led us over an hour through the mine, very entertaining, very competent! John has stated very good working conditions in the mine for one hundred and fifty years ago was worked, with candle light, in the dust and dirt, with the noise of metal hammers, which embark on chisels and explosives, which was ignited in the holes. It was fascinating! In addition to the geological knowledge John could of mine tell too much from history, how it started, how much was promoted, and why it came to an end. Very exciting, we found his descriptions of how he and his colleagues again have uncovered the mine in the last few years, and what are the plans for the future. If we should be back in a few years in the area, we will go over in any case. We are curious what John and his colleagues still everything will be free. In any case about 20 m additional depth to the walk-in today 65 m are promised!show original

Very impressive set up demonstrating the Ireland mining scene of the 19th century. Owner has great knowledge of the local area.
A great show mine illustrating mining life with guided visits by the owner. Travel underground to see the various levels that this mine worked to, see the tools and hear about the conditions that miners worked in. The exhibit contains some of the original paperwork of the mine and helps to shed light on the working life, how difficult it was and why anyone wanted to work there. A shop has books on geology, Ireland and it also has an earthquake monitoring system for the west of Ireland. This one is great for the family as well as anyone with an interest in rocks!
Fascinating tour; friendly and knowledgable staff.
All I can say is WOW. I had never been in a mine before this was really fun. The tour guide was great. Then they let us pan for gold
We visited today , a great location and setting . A farm setting and other attractions on site . The mine itself is fascinating and the tour guide was very good. She answered every question with enthusiasm. This is an excellent attraction for both locals and tourists alike . Local staff with local knowledge of the surrounding area . All in all made a great day . 5 stars review 👍
