  • The walk up the hill to the Cairns is a lovely challenge but so worth it when you get to see the uninterrupted views of 18 counties of Ireland. To be able to access a 5000 year old cairn and step into...  more »
  • If you like the idea of wandering about a site of ancient importance, and maybe getting a guide/tour to help interpret it, this is the place. No real visitor center or organization, more like old time...  more »
  • The walk to the tombs takes about 15 minutes and is a very steep climb, but definitely worth it. There was a guide at the entrance to the tomb who let people borrow flashlights and ensured not too man...  more »

  • Amazing place. You cab climb to the top of the big cairn and it is very amazing you can see ton of Ireland in each way!
  • This is a wonderful site. Do collect the key from Loughcrew Gardens down the narrow road several kilometers from the cairns (not the visitors centre right near the cairns) before heading up. The inside of the mounds is fabulous - great stone carvings that are more intricate than most I've seen. Update: Having now visited Fourknocks, Newgrange, Dowth and Knowth, I think Loughcrew is the best combination of an authentic looking passage tomb, stone carvings, access to the tomb, additional surrounding tombs, no charge, and remote and quiet so you don't feel like you're doing a commercial tour. If I could do only one, it would be this one!
  • Go to Loughcrew Gardens before going to the Cairns. You can get a key to the gate at the Cairn T entrance. Last time to get a key is 3:30pm. Then go explore at your leisure. The is a steep climb up, takes approximately 20 minutes, to the top of the hill where Cairn T is located. On a windy day, cover your ears!
  • Loughcrew is near Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland.. Loughcrew is a site of considerable historical importance in Ireland
  • One of the best sites we visited in Ireland. It's not terribly extensive, but it was a great short hike up the hill, a nice central burial mound, a few smaller tombs surrounding it where you can see the layout of the burial chambers, and a beautiful view.
