Malahide Castle & Gardens, Malahide

4.4
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Malahide
Home to the same family for nearly eight centuries, Malahide Castle & Gardens sits just a few minutes north of the capital city, easily accessible by car or public bus. The estate dates back to the 12th century, when Richard Talbot (a knight serving King Henry II) received these lands as part of a royal grant. Talbot's descendants lived here until 1976, expanding and modifying the original structure over the centuries. Take a guided tour to see the interior of the castle, noted for its Talbot family portraits and decorative carvings. The surrounding parkland also contains several popular attractions, including a museum housing a large collection of antique dolls and toys. • Did the Malahide Castle & North Coast Half-Day Tour as it was my last full day in Ireland and just wanted a quick trip. The castle tour wasn't great, but it was bad either. The castle was nice to visit, however, I think if offered, I would've skipped the castle and just enjoyed a nice summer day at the harbor. Our tour guide was nice and informative, giving us little tidbits about the city and real estate prices as we journey around the coast. Loved the insider knowledge. It was nice being able to sit on the top and enjoy the ride as the sun beamed down. Loved the harbor, only wish had a little more than 30 minutes to enjoy the harbor. Nevertheless, an enjoyable time.
  • This was a nice 1/2 day trip after being in Dublin all week. The castle tour was nice, if not a bit short. The tour was informative, going over the history of ownership of the castle. We got a lot of nice pictures and I'd recommend the castle tour for a change of pace if you've been stuck in the city. The butterfly house was pretty neat. I bet the gardens would be nice but I was there in November so nothing was in bloom. But you could tell it probably looks really nice in the Spring.
  • I love this place. Every time I have friends over I take them to this place. It's full of history and it's absolutely amazing. Guide tour is usually amazing and I love the kids paint on the wall. Visit this place when you're in Dublin. I highly recommend that.
  • This castle is cool to see, there are better castles in Ireland to see. The grounds are setup very well for taking pictures. I have visited this site multiple times but never toured the inside. The gift shop area is large and nice with public restrooms.
  • An excellent example of a Norman castle with structural additions added over the centuries. The castle gardens are beautifully maintained and the demesne is a joy for the walker, jogger and cyclist. A must see, living history.
