Newmills Corn and Flax Mill, Letterkenny

The oldest surviving building here is said to be 400 years old. Indeed, the whole complex is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of this country which has now given way to a more sophisticated, but usually far less fascinating technology.

  • Nicely restored mill with great descriptions of the work that went on there and the mechanics of harvesting water power.
  • So we were not going to stop here because it just didn't sound THAT interesting. I mean, really... A corn mill? But we had some time to kill, we were literally going to drive right past it, and it was free so, sure, why not? This turned out to be one of our best "off the beaten path" attractions we've seen! We've been impressed by the quality of OPW guides and videos throughout Ireland and this sight was no exception. As others have said, Gavin, our guide, was great. You got to see the corn mill machinery running as well as the water wheel. Then Gavin showed us the flax mill that produced the raw materials for linen cloth. By the way, for any other Americans out there, "Corn" actually means "Grains", and the main grain they milled were oats. We ended up spending almost 2 hours and it was well worth the time. Thanks OPW for restoring these kinds of historical sights and operating such a high quality visitor experience!
  • Came across this site on way to Glenveagh, how pleased we did! Gavin our guide was very pleasant and clearly well informed. The tour was fascinating and brought all the machinery and processes to life. Absolutely amazing, thank you Gavin. Eric and Linda Irwin, Lisburn.
  • Nice little museum with interesting stories and showing the technique behind. Staff is friendly and the best part is, that the entrance is free for all!
  • Very interesting and informative. Our guide, David, brought the tour to life with his knowledge of the mills and their history.
